Any suggestions for a good book?

Posted on 01/13/2018 11:16:58 AM PST by A Cyrenian

Can you give me some suggestions for a good read (beside FreeRepublic)?

I've always like Tom Clancy's books and Dean Koontz.

I started using Kindle and thought I would ask you what you liked.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, “Devil in the White City” was very good.

Did you like Hacks by D. Brazile?

Ah, how could I have forgotten. F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack series. MUST READ. . . and read in order.

Repairman Jack has no last name, has no SSN, no drivers license, and ignores the laws he chooses to ignore. He fixes situations for people by whatever means necessary. He lives in the intestines of society, just on the other side of the law. . . but he's a good guy who is willing to do what is needed to be done when no one else can help.

The story has a growing supernatural component as the books progress. A couple of movies were made (poorly) from the Repairman Jack universe.

I don’t know. I have yet to read a self-published, “vanity press” work by ANYONE that I liked.

That's how "The Martian" was published, on Amazon as a self-published book. Made the author millions. It has happened.

I agree about Churchill. It is a joy to read his histories.

“Virtually any book written by Winston Churchill. All but one have a historical context and virtually all are written in the first person. No one has ever had his command of the English language.”

I write essays and letters to the editor, so I reread his books to keep my language up to speed.

C.S Forester (Napoleonic era sailing novels)

Love his books. That was my suggestion.

Eric Larson has an amazing way of writing historical novels.

Islam’s Storm and The Devil in The White City are his best.

If you like Koontz, you love anything by the writing team of Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston, especially the FBI Agent Pendergast series. Should be read in order as well. These have also had a couple of movies made from them (also poorly) omitting Agent Aloysius Xingu Leng Pendergast, an independently wealthy FBI agent who prefers to drive his antique Rolls Royce while doing investigations.

Smart man. I think everyone should read Churchill, whether or not they agree with his politics. His prose is beautiful.

My favorite author is Mark Twain. No one could write like Twain. In my opinion, he is the best of the best. I have re-read all of his works countless times, just for the pure joy of it.

I always read series books in order. Only way to do it. When I first started reading iBooks, I’d check the free bin. Discovered a lot of good series that way. Including all the series I mentioned, First book free.

I was hooked.

Another good author is Dana Stabenow. AK native and while I never been there, she really does take you there.

I recently read Boris Johnson's biography of Sir Winston, “The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History”.

What I liked is that he took many of Churchill's disastrous decisions, took the opinion apart, and defends how many of these were the right decisions in the long run.

Honor Harrington series by David Weber lots of books and 3 spinoff parallel series plus at least 6 books of short stories. start with ON BASILIK STATION which you may be able to get free for kindle. The very first book in the main series.

RCN LT O’Leary series by David Drake. weird FTL but fun characters

New one Mike Brooks has 3 books. stumbled across this one last moth and am on the 3rd book now. kinda like TV series Firefly, darker but not too dark.

If you like Hornblower than the Dudley Pope Ramage series, The Alexander Kent Bolitho series and, a bit more risque, the Alan Lewie by Dewey Lambdin.

Ender’s Game by Card

Mars by Ben Bova

Red Mars but agree not the rest.

You mentioned David Weber. He did some books with Eric Flint in his 1632 Ring of Fire series. Historical in an alternate reality timeline. https://1632.org

I cried when Vince Flynn died. The writer that has continued the series has a similar style-almost a seamless
transfer. But I still miss Vince.
