Woman dies after contracting flesh-eating bacteria from oysters

Back in September, Texas residents Vicki Bergquist and wife Jeanette LeBlanc were visiting family in Louisiana. They went crabbing with friends and family on the coast, picking up a sack of raw oysters in a market in Westwego. It wasn't long after when LeBlanc's health rapidly declined, CBS affiliate KLFY-TV reports. The couple's friend Karen Bowers says she and LeBlanc shucked and ate about two dozen raw oysters.

"About 36 hours later she started having extreme respiratory distress, had a rash on her legs and everything," Bergquist said.

"An allergic reaction of sorts, that's what I would call it. That's what we thought," Bowers added.

LeBlanc's condition went from bad to worse in the first 48 hours.

Doctors told Jeanette she had vibrio -- a potentially deadly bacterial infection. "It's a flesh-eating bacteria. She had severe wounds on her legs from that bacteria," Bergquist said. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people can become infected with vibrio after eating raw or under-cooked shellfish or by exposing open wounds to brackish water.

LeBlanc had been in contact with both. For the next 21 days, she fought for her life.

...

"It we had known that the risk was so high, I think she would've stopped eating oysters," Bergquist said.

She actually caught it from a clam.

And Bergquist seems almost blasé about it.

I would guess the infection came from a cut on her leg coming into contact with contaminated water and not from eating the oysters themselves.

That said, I never understood how or why someone would eat anything as disgusting as an oyster, especially a raw one...

So I guess the correct headlines should read as “Woman eats Oysters, then later the Oysters eat the woman back”.

"Vicki Bergquist and wife Jeanette LeBlanc..."

Weird. Most guys named Victor, go by the nickname, Vick.

She had open wounds with the bacteria in it.....put money on that being the primary cause

You have to get them from a reputable place that tests the water constantly.

"Never eat oysters in a month that has a "r" in it"

Now you know why.

It's like you cleaned a fish and threw out the meat. And ate the guts instead.

I think that’s backward. The month NEEDS and “R” in it. Course, October has an R in it. Must be a cut on her leg.

I met a guy on Oak Island in NC that repairs fishing reels. Years beck he had slipped on some oyster rocks and contracted this bacteria on his legs.
The damage you could see was pretty dramatic.

Five miles from the Gulf and I’ve got that bass akwards? It has to be a diabolical plot involving meskins and dirtweed.

Oh, c'mon. This is a demographic that puts furburgers, meat flaps, bearded clam, and beavers in their mouths.

And then they do that scissoring thing.

I think you have that backwards. Only eat oysters in the months WITH an “R” in it, which would be September through April, the cooler water months.

I used to like eating raw oysters. but I don’t think I would do that any more. For one thing, eating raw food in general seems to have become more dangerous. But even a long time ago I once became very ill for a few days after eating raw oysters at a restaurant.
