More than 150 years after the death of their grandfather, a pair of grandson's belonging to the 10th President of the United States John Tyler are still alive.
They are both the son's of of Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr., the presidents fourth son.
To put that in perspective, that means three generations of Tyler men have managed to span 227 years and counting.
Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. was born in 1924 to Lyon Gardiner Tyler, the son of the late president and still lives in Tennessee.
John Tyler, born in 1790, grew up on a Virginia plantation, became a lawyer, and went on to become the nation's tenth president after the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison in 1841.
His first wife, Letitia Christian Tyler, died a year later while he was in office.
Tyler married Julia Gardiner, a woman from a wealthy Long Island family, on July 23, 1844, towards the tail-end of his one-term presidency.
She was 30 years his junior at 24. He was also the first president to marry while holding office.

Yes, Jefferson Davis was married in 1835 to Sarah Taylor, and she died 4 months later in MS of malaria. Davis remarried in 1844 to Varina Howell (grand-daughter of NJ governor Howell). David later raised a regiment in MS to fight in the Mexican War again under his former commanding officer, and father in law, Zachary Taylor. They were close, both loving Sarah Taylor as father to daughter and husband to wife. Her death devastated him, and his malaria flared up and plagued him the rest of his life.
Must not have been from Alabama.

I wish my ancestor had grabbed it ;-). It would have gone down thru another line though. He got awarded land in Wethersfield, CT for fighting in the Pequot Wars and worked as a blacksmith.
Long Island is SOUTH of Old Saybrook. I would have imagined it to be north of it.
Tyler family still owns/manages Sherwood Forest Plantation in VA which was owned by Pres. Tyler who purchased it from the future president Harrison. President Tyler’s horse, The General is buried on the grounds. Both father Tyler and son Tyler married twice to younger women in their much older age... hence the long age coverage of descendants. That and having fertility late in life.
I think one of the last civil war wives died not too long ago. Guy was in his 80’2 and married a 16 year old. The gubmint was still paying her.
Our family cranks us out pretty young ;-). I had all of my grandparents until I was about 43, I had three of my great grandparents around while I was in college. Been blessed with them all being pretty up and about until they passed too, and my surviving grandmother is probably going to be in good enough shape Ill be able to come through on getting her to see totality in the 2024 eclipse, when shell be 107!
Depends on which party nominates him.
Oh, it just goes to show how our memories fade.
I have met one of the Tyler Grandsons. He was living at Sherwood Forest on the James River in Virginia. Back in the late 80s we use to do a Civil War reenactment at Fort Pocahontas on the James River. The CW fort was built on land that was part of Sherwood Forest. In the evenings Mr. Tyler would ride around the US and CS camps in a golf cart and talk with the re-enactors. Remember his as a very pleasant gentlemen.
