Late last month, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald director David Yates defended casting Johnny Depp as the eponymous villain in the Harry Potter spin-off sequel despite the allegations that he physically abused ex-wife Amber Heard. Yates suggested that Depp is totally different from people like Harvey Weinstein because there werent multiple accusers over many years, and that he only sees Depp as someone who is full of decency and kindness. Because of that, he believes the question of whether or not Depp was abusive is a dead issue and hes totally comfortable having him in the movie.
Surely, though, Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling would have something to say about Depp being in the Fantastic Beasts sequel. After all, shes not stranger to making her feelings known when it comes to men who are assholes (allegedly or otherwise). Now, finally, Rowling has offered a statement on how she feels about Depp playing Grindelwald, but anyone hoping shed echo their misgivings about the casting will probably be disappointed to see that shes genuinely happy to have Depp in the movie.
That comes from a post on her website (via Entertainment Weekly), in which she explains that she knows some people may be confused and angry about Grindelwald not being recast, but she thinks the terms of Depp and Heards divorce settlementin which they both agreed that neither party was lying about the abusemust be respected. In other words, she says that Depp and Heard are over whatever happened between them, so it should no longer matter to anyone. She also adds that both she and the people making the film are comfortable with keeping Depp, but we all have to do what we believe to be the right thing.
Basically, Rowling is cool with it, but she says youre free to skip the movie if youre not.
Sure seems easy to forget the days of being homeless and broke AND DEPENDENT UPON MOTHER GOVERNMENT...once you’re rich and famous! ;)
I think we as a western society are just about #Me-Too-’ed”
out. We cannot continue burning every allegedly ‘Bad Man or Mean Girl’ in our sights. Most of us has doing something ugly and unkind in our pasts. We cannot keep crusading retroactively.
Where do we stop? Do we then start prosecuting the widows and descendants of all those very nasty, wicked people? Better to just deal with the present, and keep the statue of limitations on for most crimes.
Shes a major lefty flake, but actually, in this case, I think shes right. Now were going to have vindictive ex-spouses coming out of the woodwork. Their settlement was what it was, Depp clearly has personal problems (judging by the way hes run through his fortune) and this was not an abuse of power, as it was with Franken, Lauer, etc.
When a person makes their living glorifying Hermetic Mystical Neopaganism
it’s a small step to using magickal thinking in place of reason.
Amber is a nut job. I don’t believe anything that comes out of her pie hole.
That said, Depp is a nut job too.
Expecto patronum?
I’m going to have to meditate on the meanings of that phrase;
Hermetic Mystical Paganism.
It sounds dangerously interesting.
Use these words/names -
Hermes Trismegistus
Aleister Crowley
Mirror Magick
Then you can get started on your own series of children’s books.
I see.
The name of Aleister Crowley and the differently spelled word of Magick, tell me we are dealing with The Occult.
Just looking at a photo of him makes my skin itch, the hair on my neck stand up and I feel like I need a shower. He has always creeped me out. He is VD.
You comments strike me a rather odd.
Do you actually know who J.K. Rowling is?
(Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry?
Casting spells? Flying? Making Potions?)
Johnny is a nut job, but she is a liar and a gold-digger.
None of her lies disqualify him from working.
Yeah I always thought he was creepy too. He always seems to play very eccentric characters.
Perhaps she’s a hypocrite, but some need to put their foot down before the maniacs make it so anyone who has ever gazed at a good looking member of the opposite sex or laughed at a risque joke is deemed fair game to attack with impunity....
I concur.
