That $450 Million Leonardo? It’s No Mona Lisa.

You can’t put a price on beauty; you can put a price on a name. When the National Gallery in London exhibited a painting of Christ in 2011 as a heretofore lost work by Leonardo da Vinci, the surprise in art historical circles was exceeded only by the salivating of dealers and auctioneers.

The painting, “Salvator Mundi,” is the only Leonardo in private hands, and was brought to market by the family trust of Dmitry E. Rybolovlev, the Russian billionaire entangled in an epic multinational lawsuit with his former dealer, Yves Bouvier. On Wednesday night, at Christie’s postwar and contemporary sale (in which it was incongruously included to reach bidders beyond Renaissance connoisseurs), the Leonardo sold for a shocking $450.3 million, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction. Worth it? Well, what are you buying: the painting or the brand?

If something is worth $450 MM it would be a di Vinci. There are only 15 da Vinci paintings in existence.

And...gasp!...that King person on CBS Morning News was in the same room with it at one time!

Anybody that pays this kind of money for a damned painting is just stupid on a whole 'nother level.

Anybody that gets their panties in a wad over it is right up there with them.

This is the absolute height of stupidity.

One observation: Judas was bribed to identify Jesus to the soldiers. If Jesus had looked like that, it would not have been necessary.

The painting, with the marvelous globe, holding the faint reflection of the artist.

I’ve never seen anything like it and would not think it possible with oil paint.

It’s a masterpiece and worth every penny. The next time it sells will be $750 mil or more.

A tidy profit from its last sale price.

If I were a rich man, yubba dibad dibba du, which I am not, I would rather pay 450 million for a “Salvator Mundi,” than 50 million for a horrid “Ketchup on Canvas” or a Picasso.

Personally, after having seen the Mona Lisa twice, I think I like it better.

Also, most are unaware, besides the Mona Lisa in the Lourve, there's a "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo in The Prado in Madrid.

Actually overall if you can afford it it’s a good investment. It’s all in the timing and packaging.

The one in Madrid is believed to be painted by one of his pupils.

I like this one better, too. Never really got the attraction of Mona except for its idiosyncrasies. But then, I’m a fan of Rembrandt and Bierstadt.

True, but no one knows for sure and there’s no proof. That narrative fits well to make the one in Paris more valuable.
