SATURDAY, Nov. 11, 2017 -- America's hang-ups over sexuality and gender could cost women their lives when their heart suddenly stops, a new study suggests.
Simply put, women suffering from cardiac arrest in a public setting are less likely to get lifesaving CPR from a passerby than men are, researchers reported.
"When it comes to life and death, we need to reassure the public that we're not worrying about what seems socially inappropriate or taboo," said senior study author Dr. Benjamin Abella. He is director of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Resuscitation Science.

So you think these hospitals knew beforehand what the data would show?
At last, an honest answer. LOL
I stand corrected.
Volunteers and bystanders are indemnified by good Samaritan statutes. You stand a chance of trouble if you don’t render assistance. Ask the “teens” who stood around and watched someone drown a while back. The were processed through the criminal courts.
That said, when I took CPR earlier this year, the (female) instructors did say that for women in cardiac arrest, bras with metal underwires must be removed before using an AED (automated external defib). I have wondered what this must look like to a passerby.
Well, how are they supposed to score all that juicy grant money if they can't produce "correct" conclusions?
Indeed.
I suppose there are people about with a fetish that involves dying women...especially older women. I once watched jack kevorkian talk about people dying. He lit up like a Christmas tree as he described it. I'm not a psychologist, but it explains a bunch if dying people was some kind of kevorkian fetish.
I once went through CPR training delivered by a US Air Force medic. We had, I think, six men and six women in that class. I can't imagine one of us ever stopping to consider the gender of the person in need when the need manifested.
I guess I can't imagine any of us with a death fetish.

A woman like Raquel Welch Yes! Barbara Mikulski no!
It’s one study. We know none of the details. Maybe a majority of women in the study had CAs in poorer neighborhoods where people were less likely to know CPR or intervene in general.
Um, no...I’m saying the writer’s conclusions which are a) the product of bias and b) an attribution error [ie he believes that hang-ups as in neuroses are to blame] are presented as categorical fact courtesy of a false claim of omniscience.
There is nothing in the study linked that presents or discusses individuals’ reasons. It’s merely a collection of statistics.
Someone will snap a picture of you sitting on some woman with your hands on her chest and your future in politics is over.
LOL, analysis paralysis.
Same point applies: anyone who thinks it’s a “hang-up” to pause before putting your hands the chest of a woman you don’t know is an immoral idiot.
Yeah, if Judge Moore does it, you can imagine the outcry.
In a true cardiac arrest the likelihood of a successful revival using CPR is almost zero. So, yeah you have to try. But it’s probably not going to do anyone any good.
A family member who is a paramedic has expressed it as doing it for the spouse and kids...it makes them feel like something is being done.
Not for nuthin...but fat bastard men like me arrest. My guess is that not too many skinny, busty young women are dropping. There is nothing sexual about CPR.
People really need to get their heads out of the sex thing. Sex is fun. I love it with my wife. But let’s be real...as a percentage of my time sex is a pretty small part of my day.
I wonder if I am missing something if that’s on everyone else’s mind?
Heart attacks present way differently in women. The pain is all over the map. In men...it’s the traditional chest grab, and drop dead.
The study is talking about arrests. That’s heart stoppage. When the heart stops, you drop. Most of the time you are not coming back.
I work in medicine. This is BS. I am with you.
This has to be one of the stupidest things I have read.
