The 51st Annual CMA Awards saw the best in county music come together, but it was Garth Brooks that took home the top prize, being crowned entertainer of the year.
"The most important thing other than God Himself is you, the poeple who allow us to be in the greatest music ever. Country music man," the star said while accepting his award. "I love you."
The show started off on a somber note and quickly segued into political quips with hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley mocking the president.
The evening began with the first verse of “Amazing Grace” performed by Eric Church before Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and more teamed up to perform “Hold My Hand.”
Underwood and Paisley hosted the show for the 10th consecutive year, and Underwood opened the show by listing off recent tragedies, like the shooting in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of 58 country music fans at the Route 91 Harvest Festival last month.

I agree. The movie “Urban Cowboy” marked the beginning of the end of C&W.
Some would say that it wasn’t music before the 70s either. Mostly just moaning about how your dog died, your truck was broke and your wife cheated on you set to an alleged melody. :P

I don’t understand the responses in this thread. The humor was light-hearted, not hate filled and did not denigrate anyone. It was what we used to consider funny 15 years ago. I can’t think of a single joke that the butt of the joke should have been offended. If they were, then they qualify as having joined the snowflakes.
I am really disappointed with the amount of venom and hate I see in this thread. Has Freerepublic become as bad as the Democrat Underground.

Garth Brooks wins Entertainer of the Year? I thought he retired. Brooks killed country music. It does not exist anymore. This show was a fraud.
Yeah I was surprised, had on Fox morning news in the background and they kept playing that bit acting like it was oh so clever. Call me jaded, but I thought it juvenile. Not offended, but not impressed.

Much of Petty’s music had “soul.” I don’t listen to country, never have, but when a co-worker had it playing in the past I couldn’t connect with it at all. But to each their own.
I didn’t watch. Please tell me Darius Rucker didn’t join in the slamming. I LOVE his voice. The richest voice in forever.
God has not changed, He just gave His Son the authority to avenge the death of the innocent. When an innocent man dies by the hand of a man, it is by the hand of man that his death is avenged.
When the armies of heaven follow their King down here to rule, it will have been man that will kill the enemies surrounding Israel and avenge the prophets and the lives of the innocent.
This political talk against a pro-life president has dire consequences. America is in a great spiritual war. If we do not have a revival, the invasion will come to fruition.

Didn’t see that part of the show. I did however watch the tribute to the entertainers and Las Vegas murder victims. I thought it was very moving and Carrie Underwood sang it with God in her heart.
Country music and artists have gone hollywood. The songs really suck these days with few exceptions like Midland. They are awesome, genuine country sound.
By the way, I never heard this song by Dwight Yoakam until recently. it’s an old country song and has become my favorite country song ever. Sorry George Strait.
The fiddle, steel guitar, everything just comes at you from all angles. And the voice.....pure country.
