I flew out out of MCO this afternoon. I was in a security screening line that was not moving.
After about 10 minutes of literally not moving a foot, I heard "all the people in the left two lines are getting a preview of screening in 2018, all food, electronics, candies and anything larger than a cell phone must be removed from your carry on luggage".
I snuck over to a different line and got through, but this means the TSA theatre will now require that you remove everything from your carry on. My DSLR camera, lenses and flash are priority #1! Your bag of swedish fish make you a security risk!
This security theatre needs to end. sigh.
Stupid waste is time...
Israel nd El Al manage to screen passengers in a much more dangerous milieu with a fraction of the disruption and groping. El Al has not had any incident since they began screening. The principle of arbitrary power over people is much more important to our government than to that of Israel.
The bus doesn’t go to Saigon. I do not like to fly but passage on a ship takes 2 to 4 weeks. It costs more unless I pack myself in a crate and ship me.

I tend to sit with my arms folded across my chest and barely move....its that uncomfortable...
The only benefit (and it doesn’t outweigh the drawbacks) is that now the vast majority of people at the gates are flyers. In the old days everyone and their great aunt Sadie we’re at the gates to greet or send off travellers. And a bunch of pickpockets and panhandler types too.
Don’t get me started on the greatness of the “stews” of yore....
Ya, I was traveling a high level for 5 years starting in the late 80’s out of Houston. 50k miles per year. I could arrive at an airport on hour before departure, check an equipment chest into air freight, check a bag, clear security and make it to the plane with no running.
After 9/11, it got slooooooow and sometimes weird in the airport. Got so fed up with how long everything took both at the departure and arrival end that I started driving lots. My benchmark was 8 hours, If I could drive anywhere in 8 hours, I do that instead of fly. The travel time point to point was close enough to the same that I took to the road instead of dealing with the irritations of flying.
About 8 years ago, I had a chance for a head to head comparison of flying vs. driving. I drove Atlanta to Jacksonville and later in the day met up with my boss who flew ATL to JAX. We did our several days work in JAX then about 90 minutes before his flight I dropped him off at the airport while I hit the road back to ATL. We both lived about 45 miles north of ATL airport and he arrived home about 15 minutes ahead of me for my ca. 6 hour drive. If he had not been heading into the hometown with a personal car in parking and instead had messed with a rental car instead, I would have easily beat him on travel time.
I would rather not.
But I just went on a short vacation with my wife to the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.
We rented a car and drove 12 hours from the south shore of Lake Erie in one day. Arriving in North Carolina after dark. Not much fun driving in the mountains after dark. Pretty darn scary for someone not familiar with the area or driving in mountains in the dark.
On the way back we took an extra day but we rarely have had that luxury.
I would rather not fly for two reasons. First; the same reason for this thread. I hate the TSA and their processes. Second; cramped seating and airline luggage scams.
Next May we will be taking an Alaskan cruise and will have to travel to Seattle to catch the boat. I simply can’t take the time to drive to the West Coast and it would cost a good deal of money in gas and motel rooms if I did.
I don’t look forward to sitting in an airline seat for six hours however so I check in to better than economy seating.
I would pay extra for more seating space if the airlines pricing policies made sense but having checked it out, it is ridiculous. To upgrade from Economy to Economy plus for an extra 3-5 inches of leg room cost an extra $200 dollars a seat. That extra money doesn’t even get you a break on your luggage. Business class would run me an extra $400 per seat.
Airlines are getting ridiculous in wringing every penny that they can out of their customers. After I retire I doubt that I will ever fly again but until then I will have to fly because I simply can not afford the time.
This is one of the reasons we are driving to FL for our vacation and not flying.
The TSA is going to kill the airline industry.
Back in the late 70’s when I first got saved, a co-worker of mine was making comments about the rising gas prices as the government’s way of trying to control us and force us to stay where we were and not travel. He said it was easier to control people when they weren’t free to move around as they wished.
It sounded kooky then but I have always remembered it and as I’ve watched things unfold over the last 40 years and how the government has WAY overreached it’s bounds, I have always considered that he was right.
MY one daughter will take the train when she has the opportunity.
It can be slow but it is MUCH more convenient and comfortable.
I call it the sardine can.
I was forced to fly on business twice this year. They should pay me hazard pay.
Went through TPA last Friday.Left on coat shoes.Didn’t take anything out of backback that had electronic items and quart sized liquid and gel zip lock.Personally didn”t go through Xray machine.
All of them. Notice the Muslim TSA agents.
I don’t fly for any trip less than 2,500 miles one way. Makes all but part of N. Oregon and Washington State in range - and have no need to go there....
Yup tsa pre and airline status makes flying ok
In CLT I usually clear tsa pre in about a minute
