Moms are freaking out that ‘Moana’ costume is ‘cultural appropriation’
New York Post ^ | October 16, 2017 | Jane Ridley

The scariest thing this Halloween for New York moms isn’t zombies or ghouls — it’s politically incorrect costumes.

An article on raceconscious.org by Sachi Feris has been making the rounds on mommy Facebook groups. Feris writes that her 5-year-old daughter declared she wanted to be Polynesian Disney character Moana, which she worried would be “cultural appropriation.”

Her daughter’s other choice: Scandinavian Queen Elsa from the Disney movie “Frozen.”

“I had some reservations regarding both costume choices … about cultural appropriation and the power/privilege carried by Whiteness, and about Whiteness and standards of beauty,” she wrote.

Feris went on to describe a series of conversations with her daughter, particularly focusing on the ethics of dressing as Moana, who as a teen sets out on a treacherous sea journey to save her family’s island from famine and destruction — and succeeds.

In the end, Feris’s daughter decided to dress as Elsa — though Feris was concerned it might teach her short-haired brunette daughter that one must be white, blue-eyed and have long flaxen hair to be a “beautiful” princess.

But she nixed the Moana costume for Mickey Mouse, because, as Ferris wrote, “we don’t have to worry about making fun of anyone or dressing up as a culture different from our own because Mickey Mouse is a pretend mouse!

“One thing is for sure, our discussions around appropriate and inappropriate Halloween costumes will continue,” concluded Feris.

(Shaking my head) What's wrong with just letting little kids dress up as their favorites characters? "Cultural appropriation"? Please....

Fine. Just put a fake beard on her and she can go as Moanu.

Sheesh. Do I have to think of EVERYthing?

I demand any POC going on about “cultural appropriation” stop appropriating the fruits of my White, Western culture. To do this, they must give up electricity, the telephone, air conditioning, the crapper, the list goes on and on.

Make the kid go as a vampire, ghoul, zombie, skeleton, Frankenstein’s monster or something. How is some princess scary?

“cultural appropriation”

Another Lib term invented to further their agenda and intimidate everyone else.

Such terms only work because WE allow them to work.

It is the same with ‘manspreading’ and every other term/phrase the Libs invent.

They classify everything from eating a taco to wearing a headband as “cultural appropriation” — as defined by THEM.

If Frederica Wilson can wear a cowboy hat, little girls can be whatever they want for Halloween.

Lady, if cultural appropriatin' ain't your bag, maybe you should consider not celebrating Halloween at all.

Unless you are a Satanist, a wiccan, or some other devotee of demonic practice(s), you are culturally appropriating the culture of evil.

Thank you, Ms. Feris for doing your part to set back race relationships. It’s really appreciated (extreme sarcasm)

This cannot be for real. How can these people get out of bed and dress themselves in the morning?

Wow. What a bigoted woman! She needs to look in a mirror to check her prejudices.

Moana costume? No, bad, "cultural appropriation" of a brown-skinned person and culture.
Princess costume? No, bad, "white privilege."

There isn't much left to choose from. A simple ghost costume from a sheet might work, but, on second thought it is insensitive to the dead, makes the living relatives of the dead sad, and, worst of all, is highly insensitive to moslem women.

Mom, play it safe and keep your kid locked in her room, lights out.

Imitation used to be the sincerest form of flattery. Of course the libs want to get rid of it: they do not have a single sincere bone in their bodies.

Her conversation with her daughter is quite revealing, in which she suggests that she dress as Che Guevara.

These libtard IDIOTS should only have something important to worry about---like where their kids' next meal is coming from, like getting their kids over some dread disease, like making sure they get a decent education. They obviously have way too much time on their hands to allow this ridiculous drivel to stimulate even one neuron. Who is to say that there was not simultaneous discovery or adoption of certain dress or practices? Perhaps the climate was similar in two different places thousands of miles apart and the indigenous people independently dreamed up similar dress? What total imbeciles and tools these "cultural appropriation" advocates are. Making up some ridiculous to worry about when there are plenty of legitimate things to really worry about!
