Spam heists are on the rise in Hawaii, so much so that stores are putting the fatty canned meat treat in locked plastic cases.
The black market for Spam is real in Hawaii because the price has been on the rise, along with other grocery goods. However Spam is a particularly popular food staple in the string of islands as it is used in a variety of dishes particular to the state.
Stores have started putting Spam under lock and key. The Honolulu Civil Beat found cans of Spam locked up in a case at a Walgreens this week, with a sign that says 'Items electronically monitored for theft.'
There have been at least three reported major Spam thefts in recent months, with one of the heists thwarted and another ending in a $1,000 reward to capture the suspects.

Vienna Sausages or even Sardines in Mustard sauce I could understand...BUT...SPAM?
What a world!
Fried Spam sandwich.
Two Thumbs Up!
Spam and eggs! Yeah! I think that’s what’s for breakfast tomorrow.
Yummy!
The end is nigh..
Ah, potted meat. Potted meat and mustard sandwiches sustained me as a lad.
Once I learned the simple task of stropping, my shaving cartridges last until I get tired of looking at them.
Winston Smith would probably have given his eye-teeth for a can of Spam.
The "chunks" in the stew didn't contain any meat at all, as Smith's neighbor, Parsons, points out.

And chickens run wild all over the island.
Which island?
Chickens, goats, pigs and hippies run wild on Kauai.
If I remember right, there’s no limit on any of them.

Probably reminds them of the taste of LONG PIG.
You know, those examples of SPAM Haiku are like Internet archaeology. Some of them go back to the earliest days of the web, possibly even making the jump from some dial-up BBS or early university e-mail thread. I remember seeing them back in my 56K modem days.
There’s nothing quite like a hippie hunt.
You load up on the elephant with the Maharaja and then they send out the beaters.
The beaters go through the jungle yelling, “Jobs and baths! Jobs and baths!”
This terrifies the hippies who run in fright.
Some people use hippie decoys. You can use the boar decoys for this. Just put some sunglasses on them.
“Calm yourself dear. I’ll ‘ave your Spam. I LOVE IT!!
Kauai
And peacocks on Maui. They will scare the life out of you with their hollering.
I like Spam ok once in a while like when we dig ramps. Nothing better than a roll, squeeze butter, a thick slice of Spam with some fresh ramps on it but if I were going to steal meat it would be a nice thick T-bone.
It briefly enjoyed popularity in Western Europe more recently when mad cow disease and hoof-and-mouth made people distrustful of their own meats. They looked down their noses at Spam, but were 100% sure it was untainted. Rabbits (which were already popular in some countries there) were also a preferred dish during that time.
