You might not need a telescope to spot Uranus tonight. The ice giant planet will reach opposition on Thursday, bringing it to the closest point in its orbit to Earth. In this position, the blue-green planet will be visible in the sky all night long and, while youll definitely be able to see it with binoculars, NASA says Uranus may even be bright enough to see with the naked eye.

I love that whole suite, particularly Jupiter and Mars.

Will it be close enough for liberals to pull stuff out of it?

On a more serious note, unless you have a dark sky, you probably won’t see it.
I plan on going to my clubs dark sky site and look for Uranus (U-RAN-us would be the pronunciation in Latin), and I know where to look, so, if I do see it naked eye, I will be surprised.
And besides, the scientist changed the name of the 7th planet to finally kill that joke.
It’s now called “Urectum”. (Thanks Professor Farnsworth!)

I can’t thank you enough for posting that link...that is tremendous...what a great idea to do it on saxophones...I would have never thought of that, but the sound for that particular tune (Jupiter) is well suited to it...a lightness on the feet, somewhat jolly and whimsical!
Thanks-that made my day, I have a couple of people I am going to send it to!

>> Er. Its a Gas Giant. Not an ice giant. <<
It’s true that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are formally called, “gas giants.” But Uranus has way, way, way more ice than gas, so it’s literally more accurate to call it an ice giant. It’s a VERY different planet, structurally, than Jupiter, because it’s mostly ammonia, methane and water ice, whereas Jupiter is mostly metallic hydrogen.
