57 Things I Need You to Stop Doing to the Women You Work With
Esquire ^ | October 16, 2017 | Kaitlin Menza

A female friend of mine went on a foreign business trip early in her career with two colleagues who were both male, married, and senior to her at the company. After dinner with a client, hours after she had retired to her room, around 1 a.m., one of her coworkers knocked on her hotel door and asked if she would come out for a drink. She declined. After another hour, around 2 a.m., the other coworker knocked on her door. When she opened it a crack, he tried to push his way into her room. She fought him off. All three still work together.

Yes. I would tell him that he should wear a man bun or he should wear pink underwear if I thought it would get his goat.

I'm retired now but when I was in the mortgage banking business, which employs lots of women, we were told, "Never dip your pen in company ink."

Good rule but office romances and affairs have been around forever. It happens and this lady's 57 rules will never stop men and women from satisfying their biological needs at work or elsewhere. When you put men and women together in a workplace, things are going to take place that are against the "rules".

I've knew people who were having affairs at many places I worked. So did everyone else. In some cases the women initiated the trysts, the men agreed to it and no one was any worse for the wear. It is not just men. Workplaces abound with women looking for male partners or husbands. It happens.

I ended my career with 15 years of self-employment. No employees or co-workers. Now I live and work on a cattle farm. I wish I had some pretty women around to perk up my day because the heifers sure aren't cutting the mustard.

If there are 57 rules then there are another 400 rules.

A violation of (unspoken) rule #274 might not get a guy fired, but it can show up in his yearly evaluation report, signed off by his (affirmative action) female managers.

I've never gotten in trouble for complimenting a woman. Of course, I wasn't hitting on them as I did it, either, and they could tell.

Sometimes it really isn't hat you say; it's the way you say it. Or perhaps I've just been fortunate that most women I've known aren't jerks, either. And I've gone out of my way to avoid even speaking to the ones that are.

Yes, I have been happily married for a long time, so maybe that is part of it, as you say. It just seems to be getting ridiculous with women everywhere coming out of the woodwork to say how they are constantly ‘harassed’ (i.e. asked out or complimented) when I have never experienced or even witnessed such a thing. I mean do we live in entirely different worlds? Where do all these ‘boorish predatory men come from that women seemingly cannot escape them? I don’t mean to diminish true sexual assault or harassment, but it seems to be getting silly with the accusations.

I work with a girl (millennial) who announced one day that she would refuse to wait on a certain male customer ever again. His sin- complimenting and trying to start a conversation with her when he saw her outside of work on the bus. Thats how ridiculous it has gotten.

I don’t know you from Eve but really beautiful women seem get lot of unwanted attention from men from what I have observed. I say unwanted but really I suspect it is an ego rush every time they shoot a guy down. I used to know a real beauty that went to bars clubs just to see how many guys come up to her. Of course it was a game and she didn’t really want anything to do with them but it was fun, for her playing glam dress up. About 1 in 20 dudes can’t take no for an answer and it might get a little ugly. But those powerful women who do own the world until age of 30, would have it no other way. Beauty opens doors in a lot of areas of life.

If it is such a relief then explain the cosmetic industry to me?

Because a woman wants the attention that she wants and she does not want the attention she does not want. If men would just learn to tell when a woman is looking at him like he's being tiresome, these problems would be solved, but men seem unable to process women's facial expressions. Too busy staring at other things, I suppose.

Really? This is sarcasm, right? We men are supposed to read facial expressions? What's wrong with the spoken word? Men can take reality.

That is a really good article. I like how she reveals the subtext of some of the behaviors or statements.

So you put the moves on every female even the married ones because you might come across a co-worker who is unhappy in her marriage.

In a very rare flash of insight and wisdom during my teenage years, I decided not to be interested in married men because if they'd cheat on their wives with me, they'd cheat on me with someone else.

People who go after someone who is willing to cheat ona spouse are fools.

That wasn’t mean, sugar, that was just the way an adult woman corrects male behaviour that she doesn’t care for.

You are the perfect example of all that is wrong in men relating to women.

It’s condescending attitudes like yours that fuel feminism.

They love American men because they "know how to act".

Foreign women love American men, not because thye know how to act but because they have money, are a free ticket into the US, and they don't tend to be alcoholic wife beaters.

But absence of negatives does not by default mean presence of positives.

They satisfied with American men American because their bar is set so low, the men don't have to make any effort to attain it. It's the perfect scenario for lazy men.

I think we, as males, have to get over our shame and silence and talk about the women who have put us in uncomfortable situations or out right harassed us.

I’ll start...

I took an unattractive friend to her senior prom. She had no date and I felt sorry for her. As we were leaving the prom she pushed me up against the car, kissed me, grabbed my crotch, and told me she wanted me to be her first.

I had an employee strip in the backroom and invite me to have sex.

While out with a friend, she insisted that we see a drive in porn movie. In the middle of the movie she decided to emulate what was going on on the screen.

My female boss asked me to work late and when everyone was gone, she flashed me and asked if I would play with her rather substantial breasts.

All of these were unwanted advances that made me feel very uncomfortable. These were friends or co-workers, not women I was, or ever would be, interested in. Some happened after I was married and the women knew I was married.

If we swapped the genders of those incidences, the men would be abusers and cads.
