The German government is still striving to reduce climate-damaging emissions below the level it was in 1990 by 40 percent. But according to internal calculations by the Federal Ministry of the Environment (BMU) recently submitted to Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) newspaper, hard-working power plants and dirty diesel may ruin the governments ambitious plans.
Just a year ago, the German government had predicted a 2020 figure of between 37 and 40 percent. But in May, when the government had to send updated data to Brussels, a maximum of 35.7 percent was reported. And even this figure is now proving to be too optimistic, the SZ states.
Calculations have found that the gap between the goal and the probable outcome is far greater than expected.
The BMUs report states that, despite Germanys self-imposed 2020 aim of a reduction in harmful emissions by 40 percent, without readjustments, emissions will by then likely fall between 31.7 percent at worst and 32.5 percent at best.
The paper also states that failure to meet its target would be a major setback for Germany, as it would be disastrous for the countrys reputation across the world as a climate protection pioneer; BMU officials have warned against international embarrassment.

Absolutely zero.
How come she won’t stop speaking to us?
They need to tackle the real problem - their Islamic invasion.
Strike post 3. Wrong thread.
They better shut down the electrical grid, stop importing all fossil fuels and ban eating meat right now.
But the consequences to the German taxpayer will be huge as the government doubles down on these targets. Merkel is getting rid of the nuclear plants, but the Germans are buying electricity generated by Czech nuclear plants. The obsession with meeting targets is self-destructive.
Don't forget to plug up the cow butts. Wasn't cow flatulence determined to be a contributing factor to glo-bull warming?
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
Like everything else, they’ll tax it into oblivion or outlaw it.
Now we're all gonna die.
Risk? of what? Missing the targets is perhaps a risk of leaving Germany prosperous a little longer.
Who could have predicted that a cloudy northern country would be unable to meet it’s energy needs with solar power?
The horror...
IIRC the Kyoto accord targets were only met by very few countries. These new targets are the same. The whole climate scam is a circle jerk for the left.
Also missing UN Targets, NATO targets....etc etc
Wait a minute, I thought that demanding you remain in unworkable agreements is suppose to mean you WILL meet the goals in the agreement, practical or not. No? You mean the only importance in saying you will remain in an agreement is your saying you will, and the only one who errors is one who knows it’s unworkable and correctly says so? /sarc
Nor are they going to pony up the money for the UN climate fund. Still, they will lecture us.
“Merkel is getting rid of the nuclear plants, but the Germans are buying electricity generated by Czech nuclear plants.”
The stupidity of this is breathtaking. Yet she is re-elected easily. The world better keep an eye on Germany if they get desperate they have a history of bad behavior.
Bring in Volkswagen’s emissions engineers. They’ll hit he targets with room to spare.
