NBC Sports commentator Bob Costas suggested Saturday that protesting NFL players should wait until "the last note" of the national anthem to take a knee.
Costas's comments came a week after NFL players locked arms to protest President Donald Trump's criticisms of those who kneel during the National Anthem.
But the veteran sports journalist told CNN's Michael Smerconish that he believed a different approach could be more effective.
"The idea of linking protests, no matter how legitimate the issue you are protesting, directly to the National Anthem is not just offensive to the love-it-or-leave-it crowd. It actually causes ambivalent feelings, at best, among many people who are sympathetic to the issue but see the anthem as representing a lot of different things, including the country's ideals and aspirations," Costas said.
"To me, perhaps the most effective thing to do would be to stand for the national anthem, but, the second the last note is struck, take a knee," he suggested.
This tactic would also, purely from a practical perspective, ensure greater exposure, Costas argued.
"Most of the time, unless it's the Super Bowl or World Series and you want to see the singer, they're in commercial during the anthem. Now, you're going to see it," he said.

Costas is ignorant is all you needed to say.
Stand for anthem, play football, collect a nice check.
Bob Costa reminds one of Hollywood stars who beg for attention when the world isn’t paying any......
Costas is ignorant is all you needed to say.
That would be a step up the intelligence ladder for him.
Bobby here’s a real answer to the mess Monica Goodell and his sidekick Colin have stirred up for the NFL. Stand for the anthem, put on your helmets and play the game. Kneeling, slow kneeling, half kneeling leave in the parking lot. You have peeved off your fans and stop ripping at the scab.
Announcers like you have abetted these rioters so your words are hallow. Shut up, don’t kneel and play the game.
HE always seemed like such a nice man when he was young.
Another F-ing sports talking-airhead lecturing us on politics. That’s just what we need.
If they were serious, they would take a knee after the snap on every down.
They didn’t use to even SHOW the anthem until the ‘nick started his acting out last year. They COULD have squelched it, instead they decided to fan the flames. Tant pis pour leur!
Costa is a clueless twit.
Those who want to be offended can always find something to be offended about.
I am offended by the whole NFL fiasco. Instead of dealing with it, they have allowed it to fester and spread. Sports and other venues are being infected. Most of them do not even know what they original protest was about, as they keep moving the goalpost.
By the way, NFL, I have basic and tier 1 cable TV, so I have around 150 additional channels I can watch. I also have Netflix, Amazon Prime, several recordings on my TiVo and several thousand videos on my network hard drive accessible via WD TV and Plex. And there is an MLB game on this afternoon. Your’s is not the only entertainment available.
Yeah exactly.
I am beginning to think that there is a satanic angle to this... first it was the subversion of what the meaning of the rainbow was/is, then it’s what it means to be on one’s knees.... terrible to watch because of the sense of mockery.
I hope they all end up grabbing a knee. As in getting an ACL ripped up. They can then kneel the rest of their f in lives!!
LOL
Costas and his left wing ilk remain as clueless as they were on November 7, 2016.
As usual, old Bob has joined up with the wrong side. The guy is an idiot. Ignore him.
Sure would love to see someone, anyone, but prefferably an 80 year old woman just give Costas a beat down.
To little too late, Bob.
We’re not that stupid, you can’t fool us. The spoiled brat NFL thugs have shown their true colors. Actions have consequences.
