Police were called to the Johnston home of 30-year-old Erin Lee Macke on Sept. 21 after receiving a report that children had been left unsupervised, the Des Moines Register reported.
While conducting a welfare check, police found Mackes four children two 12-year-olds, a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old -- alone.
Police discovered that Macke left the U.S. a day earlier and wasnt set to return until Oct. 1, the Register reported. She did not arrange any supervision for the children, authorities said.

the 12 year olds were in charge?
I would hope so.
Hey, at least she left them a handgun for protection!
Well there were two 12 year olds, so that’s like one 24 year old, right?...................
LOL. Yep maybe that’s what this mom thought.
It’s stressful raising 4
Children as a single mother.
Was she on the dole,too?
Mother knows best.
I expect we will find out that Mom has a new boyfriend. Women who put their love life and sex life above their children’s well-being don’t deserve to have children.
Carl von Clausewitz joined the military at the age of twelve.
How mature are the two twelve year olds?
And was there an adult who was supposed to be coming but who was delayed?
There isn’t enough information here to condemn the parent.
Father????
the state owns you and owns your children
you are just a serf
Reminds me of the book Seven Alone. The Sagar family was on their way across the country on the Oregon Trail. Dad was killed by Indians. Mama died. Oldest son was 13.
Children are capable of far more responsibility than they are given credit for in the US.
At that age, I was 5'5," had a paper route, knew how to buy groceries & use the phone, knew the police chief's name, knew well the pastor of my church, could cook, clean, make sure my younger brother was OK, had an aunt and uncle within walking distance. Not saying the Iowa mother was OK by leaving, but it's not the worst of crimes.
Agreed.
This sounds like too much, but the “authorities” far too often get involved when baby sitting-aged kids are left for a bit.
The kids were supposed to be in school. Pretty hard for 12-year olds to juggle that schedule.
Johnston is mostly a very upscale area. Somebody did indeed notice the kids were alone after the first day.
The charges are all misdemeanors.
I do not agree. 12 year olds may be left for a few hours by themselves, but for over a week, no way. The “authorities” were well advised to step in here. There were relatives as they ended up in their care. That would have been proper, for the mother to have left the kids with them or at least have them provide some oversight. Yes this is child endangerment.
I agree with you that 12 year old children are capable of handling a lot of responsibility. I certainly was at that age. Even younger. I was quite capable of feeding myself at 5. However in this current age parents are not even held accountable for feeding their school aged children. At most schools with low income and even middle class students, breakfast is served as well as lunch. Some even send home food for dinner and even provide meals during the summer months. Families receiving food stamp money are not required to spend it on their children. In the end, less is expected of parents and their children because so much is simply provided for them.
