NFL anthem protests leave Pittsburgh fans conflicted about game they love

PITTSBURGH — Since the 1970s, nothing has more defined the identity of this city than its scrappy hometown football team. The Steelers rose at the same time the city’s economy sank, becoming a symbol of underdog hope.

They still had their Steelers even though the factories, mills and coal mines shuttered. They still had their Steelers as families were ripped apart, children forced to move away in search of opportunity.

“We bleed black and gold here,” said Sean Parnell, a Pittsburgh native and former US Army Airborne Ranger who served in the legendary 10th Mountain Division for six years, retiring as a captain.

“The Steelers are who we looked to as an example of achievement in the face of adversity, they were the ones who brought families and friends together every Sunday. They symbolized all that is good in us and it is hard to imagine a city in this country whose heart and soul is not more identified with their team than Pittsburghers are with the Steelers,” he said of what is affectionately called “Steeler Nation.”

But after the Steelers’ decision to not participate in the national anthem last Sunday, Parnell is not so sure about the strength of that nation.

“As a Pittsburgher, the team abstaining from taking the field during the national anthem was crushing to me for a few reasons. I come from a family that is Pittsburgh through and through — three generations. My grandfather worked as an usher at Forbes Field, Three Rivers and PNC Park. Loyalty to Pittsburgh sports, well, it is not just a hobby and we aren’t simply fans. It’s a way of life around these parts. We hold our athletes and owners to a high standard. And on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers failed to meet that standard.

As usual, Salena has her finger right on the pulse of the issue. I loved the metaphor Mr. Parnell uses when he talks about the lone veteran Villenueva standing for the anthem and everyone deserts him and then equates it to less than .4 percent of America serving since 9/11 to defend our freedoms.

Now, will they tune in next Sunday?

I think quite a few will not. My question is, will the media report it if they don't?

Yes, so conflicted, some are burning their memorabilia now and may not buy any Stealer tickets in the future. LOL

I had season tix for almost 40 years, sold the rights to buy about 10 years ago when they wouldn't allow smoking in your own seat {which I bought}. Glad I did.

Went to playoffs and superbowls, rarely missed a game, was a true Stillers fan.

No more. I may catch a game here and there but as far as being the center of my fall/winter weekend...it is over.

I knew the old man, Mr. Art Rooney, and he would never have put up with this, nor would have Coach Noll nor Coach Spittles.

What this is really about is how the left wants to get rid of the National Anthem..this has NOTHING to do with President Trump, they already got rid of the Confederate Flags, now they want to get rid of the National Anthem, the SYMBOL of America, what people are used to hearing before every game they want it gone because the left has shown what they really are, America hating a-holes

The entire NFL should be shut down. What a bunch of bumbling, deadbeat, low life, losers, from the top down to the water boys these buffoons are. Trump has wrapped these retards around his finger and the entire nation is treating them as the traitors and turncoats they really are.

These elite, spoiled, criminal, womanizers and abusers are getting exactly what they deserve...universal, rejection, across the board. Not one Owner, Coach, Team Leader took this player, vermin and human scum to task!!!

Mocking the American Flag and national anthem in England, and, then standing, saluting the British Union Jack Flag and the British national anthem. SAD!!! They all should be banned from the USA and sent to England to live out the rest of their miserable Traitor, Turncoat lives.

Or better:

“A bunch of Whiney, no-backbone Pittsburgh fans don’t know if they love America or not, or respect those who fought and died for her”.

The reality is - are we going to respect this nation - the one that makes it even possible to have a favorite team, or for a bunch of half-educated (at best in many cases) adults play a game for millions of dollars...

All while protesting some nebulous ghost of an issue that nearly none of those supposedly engaging in protest actually can articulate.

Is this about #BLM, which the original turkey, Kaepernick (you know, the guy who was fined multiple times by the NFL for using derogatory racist epithets towards black players on the field) said it was about - taking a stand for Mike Brown - even though it was proven he basically committed suicide by cop by attacking an officer after having already committing many crimes and hurting folks (and ripping off a store just moments before)...

And Travon Martin... who also apparently attacked someone and was shot for it...

And for so many others, the majority of which brought their own deaths on themselves.

Never mind that statistically, whites are killed more often than Blacks. And based on ratios of encounters vs. killing, blacks are less likely to be killed by police than whites.

The NFL, its corporate sponsors, and its broadcast partners are about to find out what happened to Target Corporation and Kellogg's, Incorporated when they took their unpopular political stances. It could be a very expensive "hit"--literally!

Yeah, I bleed black and gold but I’m done with these clowns. Not one of them could intelligently make a case for what they’re doing or what they hope to accomplish. Kapernick wears Che tshirts, loves Fidel, and thinks the police forces in the US were started just to round up runaway slaves. I’m out.

I think that what happened to Target/Kelloggs will pale in comparison to what is about to happen to the NFL.

The advertisers track it—every single person not watching the game is casting a vote.

Boycott!

Beyond that, contact that list of NFLPA advertisers and tell them you will not be buying their products. And WHY.

It's an agenda to erase our culture and traditions. What will remain if they succeed? Allegiance to Global Government.

The worst of the useful idiots are Black Lives Matter puppets who are force-feeding enablers their litany of grievances. When the memory of slavery and the Confederacy is erased, they'll have nothing left to set them apart. Those with talents in entertainment and sports will be tolerated for their amusement purposes, other blacks will have continually worse lives. Isn't that what we're seeing already?
