This is my kind of thread. I am way past the learning to survive thing, but I have come to love the lifestyle.
I am way more prepared than I ever was, but I find myself musing about selling the big house and getting a cabin in the woods.
My biggest hesitation is my grandchildren. And I will add, that yes I could live further south to avoid the heat. But then I have poisonous snakes, bugs, high humidity, etc.
At least up north I am where alot dont want to be. Which is a plus.

Rainwater off the metal roof. In winter bring the big cans in, leave smaller ones to fill and dump inside.
Potty is compost potty made to order from thrift store.
Dumped in compost bin outside. Used after 6 months. I rotate two.
Decent garden produces all you need if you amend well and put the straw down.
Wood is collected, bought, cut, whatever, all year long. Ready for winter.
Wood stove and wood cook stove.
Bath is easy in moderate size pot of rainwater heated on stove. Outside in evening in warm weather. Tons of ways to warm bath and dish/wash water in warm weather.
Have a power pack with all essentials. CB. Grundig. Etc.

The peaceful isolation becomes the preferred way of life.
I can always go to city. Cant always come home to this.
Meant exactly, best of both worlds.

Thoughts anyone?

Coleman 5-Gallon Solar Shower

https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000014865-5-Gallon-Solar-Shower/dp/B0009PUT20

A five gallon dark plastic bag you hang in a tree and let the sun warm up the water.

Yup, didn’t happen yesterday.

That doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen.

Whatever God foretells WILL come to pass.

“Honestly, I would think a bike would be your best bet for a quick retreat.”

I was actually thinking about that last week. Wondered if it would be useful in the BEGINNING of a breakdown, BEFORE anyone had time to think. After, it seems like you might be an easy target.

I worry a lot less when I read articles like this now, since we have moved out of Mexifornia and into a rural homestead. We may not be perfectly ready but we’re a lot better off than we were. With neighbors that seem to be extremely like-minded.

TADSLOS :" Even your friendly neighbors will go crazy on you." (includes photo: post #58)

Yes, I seem to recall that as coming from Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone".
THe concept was scary then, ..as it is now.
Everyone of his neighbors wanted to get into that bunker.

It’s going to be better than your feet.

Especially if the others are on theirs.

Someone would have to run pretty fast to catch up with s bicyclist.

Actually, during WWII, I recall the allies had a whole paratrooper division that were airborne, and parachuted along with their bicycles, to make them more mobile.
I believe the bikes folded up while airborne, and upon reaching the ground, the bikes were unfolded.
They were heavy-duty bikes designed to transport men and munitions.
There is currently a model "paratrooper" bike available for retail sale.

Got one and the outside shower house. Found it easier to just use rain water outside from black trashcan. In winter my canning pot at the dry sink works good too.

Who knows what reality would be, but I imagined having to ride through areas of congested traffic, stopped vehicles. My thought is to get a touring type ATB with fat enough tires to handle off road yet not too fat.

Maybe like a Surly Ogre.

Yep, that’s the kind of life I moved here for. We are somewhat south, with highs in the 80s in summer but humidity is not bad and the growing season is just long enough. it is easier to stay warm if you have a woodstove then it is to try to cool off in hot areas. But that is why I love my basement :-)

i’m probably drawn to prepping because I love the simple lifestyle anyway. I love this way because that’s how I want to be, not because I’m necessary leave planning for the worst. Although I am doing that at exactly the same time.

Bikes are great as long as you’re not going cross country.

Good luck to you but if I’m not 10-15 minutes away from a 24 hour store I get twitchy.

I could NEVER live in the country.

Different strokes !:-)

Having like-minded neighbors is key. You don’t have enough hard-hearted allies.

My friend’s daughter-in-law drove up from Florida during Irma. She carried gas cans in car. Felt she had no choice as supply was very undependable.

Anyone know the best/safest way to do that? Type of cap etc.

An airmans sectional is also a very useful map format.
