So I've been following the Equafax debacle like most.
Now we've learned that 143 million people's identity have been irreversibly compromised thanks to Equafax's nonexistent security.
Now most people are worried about their precious credit cards. But the bigger nightmare is your pedigree info. Name, D.O.B, SSN, addresses, etc...
This is the potential nightmare info from your IRS activity, work history and even your ability to buy own and carry a gun and vote!
Imagine someone, illegal or not gets your info, memorized it and then gets arrested for a felony. Imagine they even plead guilty in court to it, perhaps to escape jail time because you, like me have never been arrested for anything. So it's a first offense. Then the guy or gal using your ID simply walks away.
Now you are a convicted felon of a crime you didn't do and very soon you'll have an outstanding warrant for probation violation, because the one who stole and used your ID obviously isn't going to report for felony probation.
Now you try to by a gun one day or renew your carry permit or perhaps you just drive up upon a holiday DUI check point and now you're in handcuffs.
Or you go to vote in the next election only to find you already voted. Imagine if 10% of all those IDs stolen actually voted in the next election for the opposition?
This thing is way bigger than credit cards...
The New Normal...
I’m moving to the Fiji Islands!
Good idea I guess for myself to have thought doing Equifax credit score checks was a scam and also an awaiting disaster, eh?
Bad thing is, you don’t have to have ever done a thing with Equifax. if you ever bought anything on time. ie: house, car, TV, revolving charge card, credit card. Or ever tried to rent an apartment, had a hospital bill go to collections. The resulting credit checks, monthly payment updates keeps you current in the system. You never had to communicate with Equifax for anything and the data on you was there to steal.
With 143 million, i’m going with the wildebeest theory. We all swim the river and the crocs can only get so many.
I haven't called them or any of the agencies yet. The thought of giving most of my SSN and other information to the company that probably compromised my information to safeguard me if my information is stolen is just too weird.
When the class action law suit comes out we should participate. Did you sign up for the ID protection plan?
Privacy laws are created by lawyers to help their clients, not us.
I’m not worried at all.
My information was already hacked from OPM years ago.
Whether you are or not, you can enroll, for free, in a year's worth of identity theft protection.
If you enrol, you forfeit your right to sue or join in a class action. Read the fine print.
But they don't give the option to see what of your information was stolen. 143 million people all demanding full analysis and printouts of what of their data was stolen could do some serious damage to their bottom line.
Whether you are or not, you can enroll, for free, in a year's worth of identity theft protection.
I think I'll get a credit freeze instead. From what I understand that also cuts off a revenue stream of the credit agencies - selling your name to advertisers - which would be a good thing for the country.
The likely hood of someone using you if to skate on a crime is laughable. Police will finger print them and compare their face to your state id.
I am more worried about my 815 credit score.
Another argument for the fairtax
There is no justification for a database containing all the personal information imaginable on a person without his consent and that is used for background checks, job applications, selecting “dating” partners and the purpose that their name implies is their ONLY purpose: credit checks.
They are not f*cking CREDIT BUREAUS, damn it! They are what the government is not permitted to create on us: the ultimate database.
But the government controls them with the result that the credit bureaus are an extension of the government! That is the problem!
I did a credit freeze on Eauifax but could not on the other two.
One of them asked for my favorite TV program, and I have no idea what I put for that. There was no phone number or email account to contact them.
I went through the entire process on the other one only to get a message that said I could not do that for whatever reason. I think I can change it by mail.
Thanks for the ping!
FAIRtax, indeed!
Go to https://www.fairtax.org to find out how to end the USA’s tax nightmare! Help us abolish the Communist Manifesto inspired progressive income tax and the IRS!
Help us replace the income tax with the FAIRtax and abolish the IRS in the process!
America will never be a FRee country so long as we have an income tax and an IRS!
Same here. I’m sure that I’ve been cloned into a Mexican, Nigerian and Filipino by now.
What strikes me as extremely peculiar is not the fact all of this information was hacked, but haven’t heard much concern or information about “WHO” hacked it - - -
