This is the worst fall for new TV shows in the decade I’ve been a professional TV critic. And it’s hard to find one much worse in all the years I’ve been cognizant of “new fall TV” as a concept, since the late ’80s.
The comedies didn’t make me laugh. The dramas made me roll my eyes. Even with the boom in platforms making new TV, there’s but one show I’d recommend wholeheartedly and a smattering of others that made me say, “There could be something there if they work out the kinks.” The vast, vast majority of the new shows — whether on broadcast or cable or streaming — are just plain bad.
Now, to be sure, there are some heavily anticipated shows I have yet to see. Star Trek: Discovery, for instance, hasn’t sent out screeners to critics. (That CBS All Access is playing so coy with the show isn’t a great sign, but with a major project like this, it’s entirely possible the post-production process is taking longer than usual.) But I’ve still seen the vast majority of new series — and they’re bad.
So when people ask me what new shows they should watch, it takes but a few seconds to say, “Hey, The Deuce is good!” But if they’re not fans of David Simon or James Franco, or if they don’t have HBO, well … ABC’s The Mayor is pretty charming. Fox’s Ghosted has a good enough cast that I guess it should pull itself together eventually. CBS’s S.W.A.T. is certainly ambitious for a remake of an old TV show, even if it’s not all there yet…

I’m just now getting into “THE WIRE” on Amazon Prime.
It takes too much time. I just want to watch an episode and not be stuck with a cliffhanger. It’s why I bought Firefly on DVD and very much enjoy it, still.

Pink Lady! I remember them. They had a one-off hit in summer of ‘79. Kiss In The Dark, which was kind of a disco song. They were supposed to be the next Abba but it never turned out that way.
My comment was in reference to 1977 (when Three’s Company debuted). That same year, Blansky’s Beauties also was on (for a staggering 13 episodes).
the Pink Lady reference reminds me of the old Captain and Tennile show. the have children sit on throw pillows on stage dealing with things one level below Mr Rogers. My 13 year old daughter watches the Brady Bunch Variety Hour with the June Taylor Swimmers for laughs. She likes the 70s getups. in many cases, it is her first exposure to the black music of the 70s, but done by Bradys in medleys, and she herself is black! I don’t know if that is a crime or not
Netflix, Amazon, Sling, XTV. are excellent.
every girl is a super hero, every black a genius or doctor, every show has a least one homo, and every white man is depicted as a hapless moron.

Thenwire was noted for a season ling story and some of the characters went alls seasons especially to ,cops doing the wire taps. Good exposition of the city of baltimore although fiction.
I can see your preference, but I prefer a long-term story and character development. the wires famous for realism and showing the underbelly of a corrupt crime ridden city.

There was a knock off of Laugh In in 1969 called Turn On. It was so bad that it is reputed to have been cancelled while the first and only episode was still on the air.
Yes have seen all of the Prime suspects. As liberal as she is, i am a huge Helen Mirren fan and watched her in the original. This latest was too short and I look forward to more.
They did one with an Italian detective on Masterpiece and i’d like to see that come back.
Did Inspector Lewis finally quit full time?
I have been on amazon prime since it started and I am very happy with the service. There is an endless amount of programs, documentaries and for a few dollars movies on demand.
Some of their programming is made for Amazon and is really first rate viewing. It’s well done and I think there will be more and more games f it in the future.
I joined Showtime as well and while a little expensive I think it’s worth it. I can cancel at any time.
I own a small flat screen TV which I have not hooked up since a friend gave it to me. I watch everything on my laptop. I’ve no need for cable at all. The cost for the internet alone is almost 100.00 as it is. Add cable viewing and it’s almost another 100.00 or more each month.
Anyone who didn’t watch I Claudius needs to get on it. Also read the books I Claudius and Claudius the god.

Blansky’s Beauties was so bad they canceled the show, removed Nancy Walker tried it again with a different name. It to failed.
But there was one nice blond bimbo in the show.
Have you been able to watch any seasons of the British Detective series "Vera."? "Foyle's War" was also a good series, as was "Lewis."
LOL... That was the show that led me to dispense with all sitcoms while in high school. I hadn’t watched another sitcom until the final episode of seinfeld sometime over a decade and a half later. As a young male teen I also felt that ‘Soap’ was an insult to the sense of humor of young male teens.
Speaking of Derek Jacobi if you like family drama and old people try Last tango In Halifax with him and a great british cast. Warning, lesbians ahead.
