2017 is the worst fall TV season in recent memory
Vox ^ | September 11, 2017 | Todd VanDerWerff

This is the worst fall for new TV shows in the decade I’ve been a professional TV critic. And it’s hard to find one much worse in all the years I’ve been cognizant of “new fall TV” as a concept, since the late ’80s.

The comedies didn’t make me laugh. The dramas made me roll my eyes. Even with the boom in platforms making new TV, there’s but one show I’d recommend wholeheartedly and a smattering of others that made me say, “There could be something there if they work out the kinks.” The vast, vast majority of the new shows — whether on broadcast or cable or streaming — are just plain bad.

Now, to be sure, there are some heavily anticipated shows I have yet to see. Star Trek: Discovery, for instance, hasn’t sent out screeners to critics. (That CBS All Access is playing so coy with the show isn’t a great sign, but with a major project like this, it’s entirely possible the post-production process is taking longer than usual.) But I’ve still seen the vast majority of new series — and they’re bad.

So when people ask me what new shows they should watch, it takes but a few seconds to say, “Hey, The Deuce is good!” But if they’re not fans of David Simon or James Franco, or if they don’t have HBO, well … ABC’s The Mayor is pretty charming. Fox’s Ghosted has a good enough cast that I guess it should pull itself together eventually. CBS’s S.W.A.T. is certainly ambitious for a remake of an old TV show, even if it’s not all there yet…

Gilligan was pretty enticing. But Maryanne was the hottest.

I’ve been keeping tabs on all the new programs coming this fall, and mid-season, and the majority of them won’t be worth the time to record, at least in my house. I’ve also scratched several existing programs off my watch list because the writers have taken them to places I care not to go, and because they’ve become redundant.

I didn’t see Blansky’s Beauties, but I remember Penny Marshall as Laverne promoting the pilot, much as Henry Winkler helped kickstart Laverne and Shirley.

I grew up during the mid to late 1970s and many of those sitcoms were awful. Even for the standards of those times. "What's Happening", "Welcome Back Kotter", "Mork & Mindy", "Laverne & Shirley" - just to add a few more. Then you had the "Love Boat", "Fantasy Island" and "Supertrain."

Even if you set out to make bad shows on purpose, I don't think you could have done any worse.

Are you within range of over the air channels? You can get a good digital antenna for $20 nowadays, and have all the networks without paying anyone anything, and have baseball and your local news or whatever you like on the regular channels.

I wonder what the average age of people on this thread is?

Plenty of good shows just various sources. The networks have been dying for two decades. They new trend is updates. Will and Brace, and there’s talk of Frazier and a few others.

HBO is bringing back Curb after he insisted he was done. Can Seinfeld be far behind?

Mr. Mercedes is awesome...and very creepy. Never read the books as I stopped reading Stephen King when he decided to go politically stupid.

Glad I never watched Two Broke Girls. The previous for it looked awful.

I’m surprised they haven’t decided to do a remake of that...yet.

***This is the worst fall for new TV shows in the decade***

I remember another real bad fall schedule back in 1968. It was so bad LAUGH IN did a joke about looking at the future of America and foresaw....”President of the USA, Goldie Hawn asked NBC to STOP THE BOMBING!” (huge amount of hysterical laughter followed.)

The joke was the Dem party at that time wanted Lyndon Johnson to STOP THE BOMBING of North Vietnam to help them win the 1968 election.

That is a good show.

Too Cute on Animal Planet is a guilty pleasure.

Puppies, kittens and the occasional weasel.

Liking the Unabomber mini-series. Great descriptions of the development of linguistic forensics.
