This is the worst fall for new TV shows in the decade Ive been a professional TV critic. And its hard to find one much worse in all the years Ive been cognizant of new fall TV as a concept, since the late 80s.
The comedies didnt make me laugh. The dramas made me roll my eyes. Even with the boom in platforms making new TV, theres but one show Id recommend wholeheartedly and a smattering of others that made me say, There could be something there if they work out the kinks. The vast, vast majority of the new shows whether on broadcast or cable or streaming are just plain bad.
Now, to be sure, there are some heavily anticipated shows I have yet to see. Star Trek: Discovery, for instance, hasnt sent out screeners to critics. (That CBS All Access is playing so coy with the show isnt a great sign, but with a major project like this, its entirely possible the post-production process is taking longer than usual.) But Ive still seen the vast majority of new series and theyre bad.
So when people ask me what new shows they should watch, it takes but a few seconds to say, Hey, The Deuce is good! But if theyre not fans of David Simon or James Franco, or if they dont have HBO, well
ABCs The Mayor is pretty charming. Foxs Ghosted has a good enough cast that I guess it should pull itself together eventually. CBSs S.W.A.T. is certainly ambitious for a remake of an old TV show, even if its not all there yet

The Rifleman.

Found: Roy Rogers, Petticoat Junction, Mr. Ed, Rockford Files, Cannon, The Original Hawaii Five-O, Hazel, Father Knows Best, Flying Nun, I Dream of Jeannie, Green Acres, Bewitched, Barny Miller, Night Court, M*A*S*H, Bonanza, Perry Mason, Twilight Zone and others.
And *!GASP!* THEY USE REAL GUNS (with no sparking lead!) and SMOKE CIGARS, PIPES and CIGARETTS!!!
This crap they put out these days is absurd !!!
hollyweird can't make anything new worth watching and what they do put out is “xxx the 27th” that is even worse than the original crappy movie or show.
BTW We ended up with Cable for 1/4th the price of the dtv Thieves for the same crap PLUS the above Vintage Shows.
It's like being a Kid again;)
But not a starship commander, so they do not count him.
They do some singing on the show and are actually pretty good.
The reruns come on after our local news, so sometimes if I am not quick enough, it is on when I come to bed. They tell jokes so stupid I cannot believe someone could actually write that. Then I switch it to something watchable or turn it off.
Oh yeah! The original star trek with completely recreated exterior view shots using computer animation. Love it! I gotta look for twilight zone. One of my all time favorite shows.
OK, got it. Had Fonzie jumped the shark at that point?
Chuck is batcrap crazy, but I’d hire him.
Sisco....yep. Guess they’ll have to change that to first black female. ;)
Yup. The Nielsen ratings for viewers under 35 is tiny. I think network TV will eventually be sports and reality shows.
My wife might be disappointed. She was a Jag fan, and I have never like tv shows about lawyers.
I am looking forward to Seal Team, The Brave, and shocking to me Young Sheldon. I never watch BBT, but honestly the previews look funny with Young Sheldon so I’ll give it a shot. 9JKL I will give a shot because I like the actors in it. I agree the rest look weak. I am looking most forward to Chicago Fire......that season finale was incredible and scary......
Hope the return of WILL & GRACE bombs.
I hoped it did to, but they already gave them a second season even before it airs. So we are stuck with it for two years (not that we watch it). But just hearing about it, pisses me off.
Lewis was Inspector Morse’s #2 before Morse retired. Lewis learned everything from Morse. Great show. Many seasons.
Network scripted TV shows are horrid. At first, I thought it was because at my age, I’ve seen every possible TV trope there is at least one time. But Seinfeld and 30 Rock showed that new comedy is still possible. Then I attributed it to my being out of the age demographic whose eyeballs the sponsors want to attract. Maybe networks are for kids.
Reality TV isn’t bad. The rest of the shows validate the notion that good TV has migrated to cable.
Thanks for the info on another season of “The Middle”. I had assumed it was completely over. Will set it to record, as I’ll be at a quilting retreat then.
We didn't know any better or expect anything more back then.
In the last few years, there's been some great stuff to watch, a lot of it on premium cable, and it only makes this year's broadcast network fare look worse (not that it isn't bad all by itself).
“Three’s Company” differed as it was a success, and had some great actors (Ritter, Knotts).
Three’s Company. Talk about playing the trump card of lousy stupid TV shows. I think Hollywood is completely out of ideas. It had to happen eventually.
