Who should we donate in support of Harvey?
Vanity | August 29, 2017 | Self

OK Freepers, what is the best charity to give to support Harvey?

The Red Cross? I have been hearing them panned since Vietnam.

What about the Salvation Army?

Hey, the Clinton Foundation did great work in Haiti, just ask Hillary.

What are your suggestions?

[So...in response, you’re all butthurt at S/A.]

It’s not being “butthurt”.

They are an organization that relies on donations for their operations, but their decision to cancel said event shows that they more focused on following political correctness then they are actually raising money for those in need.

So therefore, they don’t value my money as much as another organization would.

I would feel the same if an organization pulled out of a Christian venue or organization for example, for fear of offending the offendable.

I'm considering Samaritan's Purse, but have some questions (based on bad experiences donating to outfits like the Salvation Army and March of Dimes).
  1. How often does Samaritan's Purse send out fundraising letters to those who have donated? If it's more than a couple per year, is there some way to opt out?

  2. When donating, is there a box to check off declaring that my contact information is to be shared with absolutely no one?

Hate to tell you but NOT the Red Cross. In the Texas fires of 2011 I and others had experiences that made me swear off the Red Cross forever.

There are several independent / private agencies / NGO’s such as Franklin Graham’s Society of Samaritans and Salvation Army that I prefer as two by name.

In our peril in the fires of 2011 HEB Grocery were the people who were like knights on white horses riding over the hill to our rescue. They brought their disaster trailers and trucks full of food to feed our fire fighters. It was amazing. The H.E.B. stores are family owned and they have a charity. If you have ever heard of Laity Lodge and the Fondation for a Better Life you have heard of the Butt family foundations.

In the fire of 2011 Red Cross would not lift a finger until there was a national disaster declaration and Barky would not do that. Red Cross do not get reimbursed by FEMA until disaster declaration.

Many local people stepped up to the need and did amazing work in our fires of September 2011 for five long days until FEMA and Red Cross finally showed up. By then the worst was over. It is a story that should be told and is largely totally unknown. A small town, Magnolia, on the outskirts of Houston banded together to fight a fire that destroyed nearly 3,000 acres of suburban forest but very few homes. The ring leaders of the grass roots effort were the county judge, a guy who owns an ATV store, four firebrand young women and a marine with a smoker trailer. From there it was local preachers, citizens and the people of Houston who drove out to our supply reception points with all manner of supplies organized by a young man using Facebook. At the peak nearly 1,500 firefighters were fed, sheltered and cared for in the high school VoAg building. Facilities provided included a dispensary complete with doctors, nurses and pharmacy, dining hall, spike room for snacks, showers, laundry and air conditioned bunk room all attended to 24 hours a day by an organization of volunteers who did everything.

The heroic actions of firefighters to save homes were, amazing does not cover it. I saw trucks come back in from stands to save homes with the paint scorched off and the headlight lenses melted. A wild fire team boss from California said it was the hottest fastest moving and dangerous fire they had fought in a 32 year career. Yaupon Holly that is dominant in the understory of East Texas forests does not simply burn, it explodes.
Firefighters from as far away as Maine came. There were things that went on behind the scenes to make things happen most of us will never know about.

NOT Red Cross gets my vote. There are better groups to help.

I’m figuring similar efforts are being organized for Harris County, Fort Bend County, Montgomery County, Brazoria County, Galveston County etc. Texas will need and appreciate help but even if they don’t get it they will prevail. Of that I am confident.

Correct!

Salvation Army has become another joke like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, YMCA, etc.

Part of my problem is that I had been spoiled by CAS Cares:

https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.profile&ein=581967339

100% of the donation went to the needy organization. Unfortunately in this case they are not local so I cannot give thru them.

The company owner got pissed at UNICEF and started his own charity to support locals. But he is no longer the owner (3 business sales ago), and I cannot give to them directly.

Yaupon Holly is similar to the manzanita that is prevalent in CA forests.

Ultra hard dense wood that burns hot as hell and coals remain hot sometimes for days.

But the worst danger to fire fighters is Chamise.

It grows in huge patches, grabs clothing, and impedes travel to a crawl.

I’ve given through my church in the past and they’ll forward your donation to their own national relief organization which will perform relief services in the name of your denomination. You can’t go wrong in giving where your church family recommends. BTW, in cases of local flooding in my area over the years, in heavy rainfall that causes local damage not important enough to make the national news, my local church has collected money for local cleanup, even providing cleanup kits and mops and the Knights of Columbus volunteers go in and serve food to the cleanup crews on site.

Salvation Army has become Political Correctness Incorporated.

They’re worse than worthless; they promote destructive social policies across the board.

Agree - Samaritan’s Purse. I also give to them through “Amazon Smile.” I worked with Samaritan’s Purse and Baptist Haiti Mission in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Not only did they provide food, shelter and services, but we also went to shelters several nights a week to give a gospel presentation.

... and Salvation Army cancelled their gala fundraisers at Mar-a-Largo for next year.

I called the Salvation Army to cancel my recurrent monthly donation because of that.

I was reconnected to to a "supervisor of sorts" who asked why I was canceling. I was about to complain about the injection of politics into the mission of the Salvation Army when he asked, "Is this in reference to Mar-a-Lago?" When I responded yes, he said maybe I would consider returning when leadership changes or has a change of heart.

Apparently, The Salvation Army has received more than a few complaints about the CEO's decision.

I always give to this organization: https://www.namb.net/ Everything goes to the relief effort. They have voluntary disaster relief teams. For instance there’s a group going from my church and other area Southern Baptist churches to help out.
