Back in 1958 a gay male wrote Martin Luther King for advice. In his reply, King said that the gale male's orientation was a "problem", and was "culturally acquired". King then advised the young man to "see a good psychiatrist". (The full exchange is in my post #1.)
King's remarks would absolutely horrify today's politically correct crowd. So here's my question: Should all statues of MLK be removed from public areas, or should his remarks be judged within the context of his time?
Here's the full exchange.
Question: My problem is different from the ones most people have. I am a boy, but I feel about boys the way I ought to feel about girls. I don't want my parents to know about me. What can I do? Is there any place where I can go for help?
Answer: Your problem is not at all an uncommon one. However, it does require careful attention. The type of feeling that you have toward boys is probably not an innate tendency, but something that has been culturally acquired. Your reasons for adopting this habit have now been consciously suppressed or unconsciously repressed. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with this problem by getting back to some of the experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit. In order to do this I would suggest that you see a good psychiatrist who can assist you in bringing to the forefront of conscience all of those experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit. You are already on the right road toward a solution, since you honestly recognize the problem and have a desire to solve it.

Take his DC statue down. It doesn’t belong there in the first place. It’s reserved for Presidents.
... because he was mean to gays!
I was thinking about this yesterday,
you need to emphasize that he was also a rabid right wing Republican.
I think there is lots of angles to go after Cesar Chavez also. He HATED ILLEGAL ALIENS and wanted them not just deported but killed.
His PhD thesis was mostly plagiarized and his first book striding towards Freedom was probably 40% plagiarized.
Most of the speeches were written for him by a brilliant wealthy Jewish socialist car dealer from the south, a very big FBI target, which is how the FBI originally became interested in Martin Luther King.
MLK also had a personal habit of hiring whores and often then beating them up.
no one can test his amazing Charisma, his power of speech and the justness of his cause.
but I say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander and maybe we should take down the statue.
you know I think we have to start seriously thinking about that.
"Grabbing Pussies". What a great band name that would be.
NO WE must RENAME all boulevards REMOVE all statutes ALL historical references Erase the I Have A Dream clips and text
King was clearly a bigot, plus a hypocrite, adulterer, whoremonger and plagiarist. So we must get rid of any reference to him.
Oh yeah, and delete that national holiday too. We can’t have this, especially bigotry so recent as 1960s. I mean, shouldn’t King have been enlightened by then? He had two hundred years of lessons from the Founding Fathers to get his act together, and just plain didn’t.
Out with the old
Solid advice from MLK regarding homosexuality. Too bad his advice isn’t taken seriously.
Should all statues of MLK be removed from public areas, or should his remarks be judged within the context of his time?
No, his statue stays. He wasn’t white. Nobody will receive affirmation on Facebook for wanting to remove his statue.
> Take his DC statue down. <
I don’t have a problem with MLK’s statue being there. MLK was a VERY flawed person, as we all are. But he was also a peaceful man who was there when the country needed him the most. Just image if, instead of King, the early civil rights leaders were Nation of Islam types. The 1960’s would have been much worse than they already were.
My opinion. As they say, your mileage may vary.
The National Mall is becoming overcrowded. Stop all new projects there immediately. Its becoming a kind of Disneyland of memorials, which makes each less special.
The activist Left is going to make it worse in the future.
How about we start lobbying for the removal of ML King statues and his name from streets and buildings? After all, he was a Homophobic hater by suggesting treatment for homosexuals!
Yes, MLK was flawed but those flaws don't trump the good he did against a powerful intransigent Southern Establishment. An Establishment that makes our Liberal Elite Establishment look almost mild by comparison. Both evil - both arrogant - both using their exulted position to lie and control...both backing mob rule and identity politics.
It's the same fight - different masks..
It's still easier backing Trump today compared to being a civil rights worker back in '63 and '64 but that could change...
Rabid? No. More a voice of reason, relative to others of his time.
Homophobic, a plagiarizer, and a user of women. Three strikes and he should definitely be out. Take the sledge hammers to those big blocks of stone in the Washington mall.
If the SJW crowd was intellectually consistent they would have to answer yes to that question. MLK Jr. and Anita Bryant had the exact same views on this topic. For that matter, Jesus did too(Matthew 19:4-6).
You know I actually completely agree with you.
I know my tone wouldn’t come across in raw text.
what I wrote was actually intended more of a intellectual exercise but the important thing is that we actually agree.
I almost always agree with your comments... I’m glad I missed your tone on this one... feels better now.
