I tested the box multiplication system and the squaring stuff this morning.

Can't figure out how it works, but is works.

Just good old numbers fun, I guess.

This is just a twist on the normal multiplication method they taught you in school.

Post some real speed math !

Example
............3...2
............1...6

2x6..=......1...2
2x1..=......2...0
3x6..=..1...8...0
3x1..=..3...0...0

carry 1

........5...1...2

Math’s hard ;-)

For some it is...anything to help make it easier. Everyone picks up learning methods, differently.

Now the first video is almost useful.

He is teaching you to add from left to right, instead of from right to left.

This is useful for doing simple math in your head.

But he is skipping a key step of mental math.

You have to restate the problem after each math step.

Say 24 plus 17.

So you add the 10 to the 24.

The new problem is 34 plus 7.

Then add that.

By repeating this method, you can add large numbers safely.

But you have to put the new problem into your memory by stating it.

I remember a trick for multiplying by 11.

34 x 11 is calculated by splitting 34 and using the sum for the middle digit.

or

34 is 3 (3+4) 4 or 374
45x11 is 495
55x11 is 5 (10) 5 or 605

“Say 24 plus 17. So you add the 10 to the 24.
The new problem is 34 plus 7. Then add that.”

That’s how I do it without paper. I didn’t realize it was an actual “thing” / method.

Thank you so much for this and the earlier one of squaring. I sent the links to my homeschooling daughter and she loves this guy.

I hated Algebra and Geometry in high school and barely passed it . However , I have a special gift for doing addition , subtraction and multiplication in my head at lightening speed . Super fast at doing calculations on a blackboard , too . Amaze my English students and the math teachers at my JHS in Japan . ^_^

I love math and these are fun. Thx! (Math easy, Language, huh?)

Consider yourself a warrior fighting Common Core!

My kids went to a great public school system but I still homeschooled them in Math (used Kumon) and conservative American History.

Still waiting for Trump to dissolve Common Core.

Khrushchev told us in the 50’s they would bring our downfall through our school system.

They are winning.

I would have been done with the multiplication problem in half the time doing it the traditional way.
