MDZhB has been broadcasting since 1982. No one knows why.
In the middle of a Russian swampland, not far from the city of St Petersburg, is a rectangular iron gate. Beyond its rusted bars is a collection of radio towers, abandoned buildings and power lines bordered by a dry-stone wall. This sinister location is the focus of a mystery which stretches back to the height of the Cold War.
It is thought to be the headquarters of a radio station, MDZhB, that no-one has ever claimed to run. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the last three-and-a-half decades, its been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone. Every few seconds its joined by a second sound, like some ghostly ship sounding its foghorn. Then the drone continues.
Once or twice a week, a man or woman will read out some words in Russian, such as dinghy or farming specialist. And thats it. Anyone, anywhere in the world can listen in, simply by tuning a radio to the frequency 4625 kHz.
Its so enigmatic, its as if it was designed with conspiracy theorists in mind. Today the station has an online following numbering in the tens of thousands, who know it affectionately as the Buzzer. It joins two similar mystery stations, the Pip and the Squeaky Wheel. As their fans readily admit themselves, they have absolutely no idea what they are listening to.

Haven’t had my ham rig up for a while. Looking to get back to it next Spring. Meanwhile, I picked up a functional Zenith Trans-Oceanic Wave Magnet radio at a local thrift store for $100. Works surprisingly well, but it could use a tune up I think. Old school. All vacuum tube and those big tunable IF cans.

My grandfather had a ham radio and when I was 12 or so I would turn the dial around and sometimes get that numbers girl.
I kinda surmised it was something clandestine and liked the mystery of those stations so far away. I even liked the poor broadcast crackles, made it all the more mysterious.
So, if you listen to 4625 kHz, are you colluding with the Russians?
Bkmk.
For later
LOLOLOL!!!
You win the internets, today ;-)
That’s the very station I listened to for years that made me the Russian bot I am today.
I heard Brother Stair is trying to buy time on UVB-76.

It translate to “Yo momma, I had her.”
Well it could be a one-off system where you’d head towards it and then go off on a different heading; like if you head towards it on say 260 and go off on 090, something like that.
The woodpecker is no more. It is located near Chernobyl. It was an over the horizon radar station operating around 28kHz.
That’s ok, at least it was an original story and not another remake of something else. That will be next, the LOST Reboot.
