Not Sold In Stores Anymore; Home Stereo w/ AM-FM Radio. or Replacemnt Cords for CD Players!!

I decided it was time to replace my very old home stereo system from Magnavox. It had a CD player, an AM/FM radio and a pair of speakers. I must have bought it back in the late 90's. I knew it would be difficult to find an affordable CD player vs one that took DVDs or other. What I didn't know was how difficult it would be to find a home stereo system that allowed me to get AM radio. All the systems I saw online offered FM. That was no problem.

I went into Best Buy and was told I would have to connect to AM by using my iphone's Bluetooth App. The Bluetooth App would then be used to link up and connect with my home stereo, which would then provide access to AM radio.

Oh. said I. I didn't want the bother and all the extra fiddling needed to make that connection. So I looked online, and settled for something from LG for a little over $200. According to the online Ad, I could have both FM AND AM radio. I was thrilled, since I rely on AM to get most my talk shows. A few days pass, it's delivered, I set the home stereo system up , only to find, you guessed it. I still would be expected to use Bluetooth to establish the connection to Am. Damn!

After lots of silent grumbling, I decided, Okay, I guess I'll just have to learn how to connect. Eventually, I found the App, but the Bluetooth was only able to connect to a port with a headset symbol above it. Meaning, I suppose, Am Radio is only accessible via headphones. (Oy!!)

At this point, I just dug up one of my old CD players. A small model by Memorex, and I now use this to access AM Radio until further notice. I had to hunt for a replacement cord for it. Seems most stores don't even sell your basic appliance cords anymore. They are sold online for about $17. adding postage, brings that to about $26. No thanks. I found one stuffed in my box of old souvenir from college days. It still functions fine. Life is for learning, right?

Time for a trip to Goodwill. Last week I got a working Bose Wave radio/CD player for $10.00. Big sound from a little box.

I bought a Kenwood system from Costco about 1994 and it had what they called at the time artificial intelligence on the CD player. When you put the disc in it would scan the entire disc and automatically adjust the equalizer for each song. It was pretty to cool.

To answer both your posts

1. Walmart unlike Sam’s Club does not require membership, and has a robust online presence not just brick and mortar.

2. If you are happy with Best Buy that’s great, just keep in mind that the Geek Squad guys have a history of pillaging information and images from computers they work on.

Try eBay. You can find anything you want in the home stereo genre on that site. Good prices and decent quality if you do your research and shop right.

Oh yes, that has been driving me nuts too.

Have a 2012 Kia and the AM radio is absolute garbage.
Upsetting as Rush Limbaugh is only on AM here, and on
a station with a very marginal signal.

Heh. That *paneling* bought me a stern scolding from a darling elderly man the other day; he came over to ask about the car and told me in no uncertain terms, that I was *bad* for not taking care of the wood paneling better by waxing it.

It was cute [he was so sincere] and I couldn't convince him otherwise. :) I mean really ....you can hardly tell the difference...

Your 'Tang is very nice; I had one like it but the floor of the trunk rotted completely through due to salt corrosion from winter roads in New England. :(

The cover can’t be closed while playing a LP.

Noticed they are trying to get paying subscribers now.

If they go under, AM radio stations will develop their own streaming apps. Local station I listen to already has one.

1979 SX-850 bought new. Using a bluetooth receiver for my iPod. If I need "old" cables, I go to Goodwill's wall of cable shame.

Love it.

Problem was the first sentence of the second sentence. You went to Best Buy. BB stinks, they never have what you’re looking for, forget they exist much like how they’ve forgotten useful products exist.

I’m a Marantz 4400 guy myself, but my brother from another mother has a Sansui 9090.

With 4 Klipsch Heresy speakers I get good results. Slowly digitizing my vinyl and reel to reel tapes.

Love the vintage stuff.

As I recall, a rag and a can of Lemon Pledge did actually make the fake wood sides on those ‘70s - ‘80s vehicles look better. The neighbors had a ‘72 Country Squire and almost every weekend, you could catch that lemony scent in the air. :-) That was a bit before Armor-All hit the market.

Yep .... I have used Pledge, with good success. :)

I was thinking of having factiod cards made up....to give to people who have so many curious questions.

And charging the folks who want their picture taken next to the car. :) This whole thing has been a trip.
