Robots that mimic ivy vines can grow thousands of times their original lengths at speeds faster than the average person can run, a new study finds.
The new soft, flexible robots could one day be used in tight situations, such as to slither through rubble or snake inside the human body...
The newly developed robot is made of soft, flexible polyethylene, the most common plastic in the world. It grows from its tip via internal air pressure, which pushes plastic tubing stored at its base up through the core of its body. The robot is initially about 11 inches (28 cm) long, but can rapidly reach a maximum length of about 236 feet (72 meters), according to the researchers.
"The body doesn't move as the tip extends," Hawkes told Live Science. "That is, you could hold the body of the robot tightly in your hands, and the tip would keep growing."

Good morning!
Good morning to you. Its 57° out with winds from the SE @ 7 mph. Partly cloudy.
We are supposed to have temps in the 50s later. I’m going to take Frank and Kathleen to the gym after breakfast.
I opened my door a little when I got back from Walmart.
When I took the trash out earlier, I came back in to smell cigarette smoke. The neighbor guy is on oxygen 24/7 and he’s smoking. I can’t get out of here soon enough!
I’m going to fix something to put in my stomach (probably rice pudding, because it’s almost pill time) and then I will try to start my day.
Back from the gym. I’m reading Stephens and Catherwood’s “Incidents of Travel in Central America.” It’s full of scenery and ruins.
I love books with eye candy like scenery and ruins. Or classic art, or flowers up close... Travel. Lots of travel, but I’m not rich enough to go where I want...like Russia...
I never go anywhere, either, but that’s okay, because one always has to worry about where the bathroom is.
I try not to drink anything after I’ve had my diuretic unless I’m close to home.
Life sometimes doesn’t like me!
And now, I’m off to bed. A couple of people who don’t contact me often enough have kept me texting since late this morning, so nothing is “on schedule.”
I don’t like this! I’m missing out on the hour I normally relax before I sleep. So I’ll see you in the morning!
What is this thread about that it has over 4000 posts?
It’s about hanging out, being friendly, talking about the weather and cats and books and music and supernatural phenomena and whatever crosses our minds.
If you’d like to hang around, I can put you on the list for the Good Morning Kitten.
Ok, but how did it get to 4000 posts in one day?
Ok, wait, ignore that. I see now its from 2017!
Easy.
The undead can do anything. Even go to the end of the internet.. ;-)
That was funny.
Yes, but it was also very true! Welcome, Bodleian_Girl, to the Undead Thread! We reached the end of the Internet of some 65,000+ posts back in December of 2004. We began by taking over a thread from jj_fate, and went on from there.
We are Undead because we move from "body to body" when we reach upwards of 6,000 posts because its only polite to not slow FR down too much.
We started out using troll threads, but those are few and far between these days, so we "borrow" them from other FReepers.
Welcome and we hope you enjoy your stay! Visits! Time with us. Whatever.
