Magic Bots: Vine-Inspired Robots Can Grow on Demand

Robots that mimic ivy vines can grow thousands of times their original lengths at speeds faster than the average person can run, a new study finds.

The new soft, flexible robots could one day be used in tight situations, such as to slither through rubble or snake inside the human body...

The newly developed robot is made of soft, flexible polyethylene, the most common plastic in the world. It grows from its tip via internal air pressure, which pushes plastic tubing stored at its base up through the core of its body. The robot is initially about 11 inches (28 cm) long, but can rapidly reach a maximum length of about 236 feet (72 meters), according to the researchers.

"The body doesn't move as the tip extends," Hawkes told Live Science. "That is, you could hold the body of the robot tightly in your hands, and the tip would keep growing."

I was reading over at National Review. Now I need to get up and move around, so I don’t fall asleep before 8:15, when I have to go pick some kids up from church.

"I was reading over at National Review."

We all do a lot of electronic travel these days. I wonder how far away actual immersive tele-presence will be. It will appear first in games. (Or the second obvious choice.)

Well done.

What do you do for an encore?

"What do you do for an encore?"

According to George Burns, the first hundred is the hardest.

Of course, he was talking about years.

This is COPD. (I don’t know why they don’t just call it “The Disease That Smothers You To Death.”) Pertussis, asthma, Valley Fever and asbestos damage to my lungs. Or, as one doctor put it, “your lungs have been insulted.”

I’ve heard of the washable filters, but I’ve never heard of anyone who has had them.

I have a 3T slave that essentially contains everything I have written, seen or gotten from someone else. Periodically, I send stuff there, in the event of a crash in the laptop. Which has happened too much to be a coincidence.

That looks like a tough little guy for sure!

Good morning, I think. Is this the second Monday for this week?

He’s a purebred Maine coon, and he’s not taking any guff from anyone.

It’s Tuesday. I checked the calendar.

They're coming pretty standard in digs they build now.

Zeke was just here. He brought the latest from SNRHA, complete with typos. I thought I was bad, but those people at Star Fleet West leave a lot to be desired!

I’ve emailed the letter to Eddie the Attorney, but it may be tomorrow before I hear from him. With my lungs the way they are, there should be some recourse for me.

Muggy and overcast, here, and I want to go to IHOP and have a really good omelet. Actually, I’d settle for one of McD’s breakfast burritos and a large iced chocolate mocha. But I need the money for other little foods.

My son called last night. We talked for 45 minutes. Wow. What a deal!! Almost like old times! :o])

I’ll have to check them out. Of course, they won’t be so critical in Utah because all public housing there is now non-smoking and has been since 2002.

Thanks, though. Who knows? I may need them in the future.

Sadly, unless Harry and Guido the Treadmill are involved, a lung-ripping plot isn’t going to get much traction. *kof-kof*

Didn’t Bill Clinton say that opposing Skynet “won’t feed one hungry child...”

SkyNet can take care of its own children.
