Shortly after leaving a party on Chappaquiddick Island, Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy of Massachusetts drives an Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge into a tide-swept pond. Kennedy escaped the submerged car, but his passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, did not. The senator did not report the fatal car accident for 10 hours. ---SNIP--- Kennedy escaped the car and then dove down in an attempt to retrieve Kopechne from the sunken Oldsmobile. Failing, he stumbled back to the cottage, where he enlisted Gargan and another friend in a second attempt to save Kopechne. The three men were unsuccessful; her body was not recovered. The trio then went to the ferry slip, where Kennedy dove into the water and swam back to Edgartown, about a mile away.

And the people of Massachusetts sent a coward at best, a murderer at worst, to the senate for 38 years.

I’m not the creator or writer of the content....I just enjoyed the concept and bookmarked the link for any article about Kennedy.

This I have never believed. There was no heroic rescue attempt. Ted Kennedy impregnated Mary Jo Kopechne. And when he drove the Oldsmobile off that bridge, he left her to drown. To him she was just another throwaway girl.

That's the real Ted Kennedy. That he did not go to prison was a travesty. That he stayed in the Senate, was given a head of state funeral, and buried in Arlington National Cemetery was and is an abomination!

Private “get together”. Could be.

That’s one of the unanswered questions about Chappaquiddick. Six men were partying with six single girls. I think many of these men were married.

It was just an odd group of people to have for a party. And you wonder why the Kennedys so quickly cleaned up the house and evacuated their people off the island before investigators could question them about the evening.

This tragedy should have ended Edward M. Kennedy’s political career once and for all.

Oh my gosh. That sheds a different light on things, if Mary Jo was pregnant and Teddy was the dad. What a scandal that would have been back then. IN such a case, it was a happy ending for the amoral Ted Kennedy to have been able to dispose of that problem.

Off topic, but never understand, how it is, that men such as the Kennedy men treat women like a piece of meat, yet feminist types never condemn them for that behavior.

They made us read Profiles in Courage back in Catholic school. Even that was a sham. The whole thing was ghost written by Pierre Salinger.

1969 and the law didn’t apply to the elites. Here we are in 2017 and the law still doesn’t apply to the elites. Sad.

F fat Ted. The gutless weak manslaughter he was.

His dirt nap was long overdue.

I only wish he had slid under a gas truck and tasted his own blood.

One word.... abortion. They will always fight to keep abortion legal and that is the only thing feminist really care about. They don’t care about women per se., but they do care about abortion. And of course abortion is convenient for guys like Clinton and the Kennedys.

Does anyone else find it interesting that this event happened on the same day that 99% of the world was watching for news about the astronauts and the moon landing.........

Key point is he went home, sobered up, put on fresh clothes and goes to the police the next day. Tells them calmly he left a girl to down the night before.

Did they include his preposterous claim he returned to the canal with others, dove into the water and disappeared into the night, they all went home and didn’t tell anybody anything, even though he could have drowned.

“We need to remove Ted Kennedy from Arlington.”

If they do, then no more Scotch fumes will rise from his grave.

Hey, wait a sec - they did exhume a nefarious Clinton crony from Arlington, in the dead of night. Forgot who it was.

There is a precedent for what you propose.

The whole thing was ghost written by Pierre Salinger.

I always thought it was Ted Sorensen. It's nice to know the tradition continued as Bill Ayers wrote Hussein's books for him as well.

Rush Limbaugh calls Mary Jo Kopechne is a national heroine for having prevented a Ted Kennedy presidency.
