She couldnt have seen this coming.
A 67-year-old woman scheduled for cataract surgery discovered she had 27 contact lenses stuck to her eye, according to a new report.
A hard mass that appeared to be a bluish foreign body was removed from the womans eye by surgeons who learned it was really 17 lenses fused together by mucus, The BMJ said in a report published this month.
Doctors used a microscope and found another 10 lenses in her eye.
The woman, who was not identified, said she has worn disposable contact lenses for 35 years but didnt regularly visit the eye doctor. She chalked up her eye discomfort to old age and dry eye.
BMJ said she had bad vision in her right eye and deep-set eyes, which may have contributed to the lenses becoming lodged.
None of us have ever seen this before, said Rupal Morjaria, a specialist trainee ophthalmologist, told Optometry Today. It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didnt notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.
Once the contact lens mass was removed in November, she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable, Morjaria said.
Her cataract surgery was postponed due to an increased risk of infection.

Disposable lenses are packed individually. No way to insert 2 by accident.
What I find remarkable is that the doctors didn’t notice until they had scheduled her for cataract surgery. Does she even have a cataract?
Thx. I had hard contacts decades ago - hated inserting and removing them. You got just the one set back then.
I believe she must have dementia and is very forgetful of her routine; what she has already done and sadly does it again in error.
Very sad for such an important faculty as vision.
I’m waiting for the 27th time this story is posted :)
