Does this mean that we are all going to die again?
We’ve learned that solar flares are what builds up the earth’s magnetosphere. Without them, the magnetosphere thins and thus weakens.
And when the sun DOES become more active, it starts hitting the planet with flares again. Normally (And this will continue to be “normal”) the magnetosphere builds up faster than the solar flares can break it down.
Today we are so invested in technology and telecom that our world literally runs on it. But that telecom infrastructure (Globally, really) isn’t shielded too well and isn’t capable of taking solar radiation. So since the last peak of solar activity (just a few years ago when we were getting scary X class flaring) what we are worried about are the latest developments not being able to handle it.
Not really worried, mind you - but the new systems remain untested .
And again, and again, and again...
Bottom line: Is this good for ham radio or not?
“Does this mean that we are all going to die again?”
Nah, it just means government has to get bigger.
No, we’re all gonna freeze again.......................
Yes.
Only this time we’re going to freeze to death.
It’s hard keeping track of what I’m currently supposed to be afraid will kill me. Is it the higher temperature, the lower temperature, drowning from the rise in sea levels?
As soon as one boogieman stops frightening the population (because we’ve heard about it ad nauseam and it has become part of the background drone of the newsreaders), the government finds a new one to replace it.
