Is Serena Williams only as good as the male tennis player ranked 700th in the world? According to tennis veteran John McEnroe, quite possibly yes.
Thats what he said in an interview that aired on Sunday and his assessment sparked some debate online and a stern rebuke from Williams on Twitter where she said his statements are not factually based and that she has never played anyone ranked there.
So, what exactly did McEnroe say to get this kind of response from the top player in womens tennis?
In an interview that aired on Sunday, NPRs Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked McEnroe about his new book, But Seriously, and questioned the way he qualified hsi praise for Williams as the best female player in the world.

please correct me if I am wrong, but as I recall this was the double standard that was employed for this match.
Correctamundo...
This is the only woman who has gone up against men and won consistently. World Champion Top Fuel Drag Racer Shirley Muldowney. She didn't win on brute strength but it does take a bit of skill to handle these machines to say the least. I imagine there are a few other sports women have won in like shooting competitions etc but to me Shirley stands above them all.
That was the first thing I thought of.
That was a great jump. If she had been a man in the 1940s, and could have taken her steroids, non-cinder track, and take off board with her, she would have been very competitive at the national collegiate level.
“Note that more women graduate from colleges now-a-days than men.”
That’s because women receive so many preferences these days.
By the way, yesterday and just now I searched for video of that “Battle of the Sexes” match that took place during the 1998 Australian Open between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. And I found NOTHING. I’m sure someone filmed it. Odd that it doesn’t seem to appear online anywhere.
thank you for the confirm,
I was in 5th grade and went all in on riggs with my classmates and female teachers. I then saw the difference in the setup during the match and how it was all postured as being fair. quite laughable.
What Mac means is Serena is good, for a girl.
If they want equal pay (which they get) there should be equal play. Let me see them play best of five set matches like the men. The mens matches often go better than three hours. Most of the womens matches are over in a little more than an hour.
That is far from equal.
I for one would not be afraid to get in a fist fight with John McEnroe. Serena? I’d make sure my running shoes were on.
Right now she is very pregnant.
He has children who are older than some of the top ranked women.
The Mob made him a offer he couldn’t refuse.
Riggs was a notorious hustler and gambler.
He would challenge unsuspecting players who thought they were pretty good. He would do such things as play while holding a suitcase in one hand. Play using some odd piece of equipment in place of a racket.
Those guys did not realize he was the 1939 Wimbledon champ.
Regardless, Riggs was middle-aged and many years beyond his prime. It was meaningless as far as any comparison of a top woman vs. top man in their primes.
It’s certainly common knowledge that few if any of the women could compete with the top 100-200 men on the tour.
After all the ‘roids she’s done she practically is a man. She’s got bigger biceps than most men, at least most Democrat men.
The idolized US Women’s National Soccer team gets routinely stomped when they train by playing 16 year old boys teams.
It's not evolution; it's biology.
Their earnings should be tied to the revenue they generate in crowd size, TV audience, product endorsements. No more, no less.
I’m tired of being told I have to “cheer” for women or “enjoy” women’s sports. I do not enjoy women’s sports at all. The best I can do is cheer for the American women in the Olympics but I still cheer louder for the American men.
