A new study shows that coconut oil isnt as healthy as many believed it was. In fact, its not healthy at all.
According to the American Heart Association, a recent survey showed that 72 percent of Americans surveyed rated coconut oil as a healthy food, compared to 37 percent of nutritionists.
The report went on to say that the saturated fat content of coconut oil is 82 percent, which is the bad type of fat. A chart in the document shows that coconut oil has more saturated fat than lard, canola oil or even butter.
The results of a study conducted by the AHA show that coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol and has "no known offsetting favorable effects." The AHA concluded that they advise against the use of coconut oil.
Olive oil and vegetable oil are considered to be better alternatives.
Paid for by the Olive oil growers group?
More recent studies on sodium show people who get less than 3000 mg or more than 5000 mg of sodium a day have a higher death rate.
Still, our doctors say sodium must be restricted to under 1500 mg a day, if you have heart problems.
Sodium is an electrolyte we must have.
Some American “health” institutions are crazy.
Although you didn’t mention it, dietary cholesterol is no longer a real concern. Our bodies must create or ingest 1 - 1.5 grams of cholesterol a day for cell use.
The Government recently took off its warnings against egg yolks they used to have for years.
Basically, eating 1,000 mg a day of cholesterol still means your blood cholesterol will be fine. That’s five total eggs, stretched throughout the day.
Mist olive oils on the market are fake? Or blended.
But it is easy to purchase quality, pure olive oil. Olive oil is also easy to identify and frying with olive oil should help in ascertaining the quality as pure olive oil doesn’t perform well at higher temperatures.
I had a slightly high resting glucose reading last year and immediately went low carb. Three weeks later, I got retested. My HDL went up, my triglycerides were cut in half, my glucose was normal and my LDL went up.
Now, there is a difference between VLDL and LDL, but they both register as LDL.
I have read than LDL will stay up for several months after starting a low carb, high fat/protein diet. It then settles back down.
It's as though your body is evacuating it.
I have olive oil that does exactly that when cold.
I don’t think it’s the extra virgin, though.
Mr. mm is on a sodium restricted diet because of kidney stones. They want him to have less that 2,000 mg a day of salt.
I never heard before that less than 3,000 is also detrimental. I wonder if it’s actually verified or some other factor involved that they are missing.
Careful reading indicates the ‘fakes’ simply do not meet the standards for ‘extra virgin,’ not that they aren’t olive oil, although there are mixed oils, some labeled so.
And Italian brands may not be actually Italian olives. Most of the studies crying ‘fake’ are themselves conflating issues.
Extra virgin olive oil goes rancid and doesn’t take heat well, so there is incentive to alter it.
California olive oil seems less likely to be ‘faked’, and Walmart’s Kirkland and Trader Joe’s are known to be reasonably priced good stuff.
“Whale oil. The human body MUST have whale oil to survive”
Whale oil, or whales for that matter are not a sustainable resource unless farmed. What needs to be done is the development of whale farms which increases the sustainability of the species for processing.
Back in the 60’s when my dad was climbing telephone poles and antenna towers he had a pair of Chippewa lineman boots which he kept adequately oiled up with real, 100% whale oil. Actually, as the family shoe shine boy and lawn slave, I was the administrator of the whale oil on the leather and I can attest that whale oil is an excellent lubricant and leather protecterant but it stinks to high heaven.
“Trader Joe’s”
As a side note - Aldie’s acquired Trader Joe’s in 1979. I can only assume that the Pure virgin olive oil there might pass the test as well.
There is an Aldie’s under construction in my little burg. When it’s completed I’ll have the opportunity to see what the buzz is all about.
Simply Nature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Aldi makes some of the lists as the real thing.
Also note that most of these ‘studies’ are old, many more than ten years old. Dittos with the chemical testing, old enough to be of doubtful current value, as brand names are sensitive to their reputations and will alter their sources.
...but recreational pot is good for you?
I heard that “vegetable oil” was NOT healthy.
The recommendations I saw were olive oil and avocado oil.
I thought this position against coconut oil was the rage when they stopped using it for popcorn.
I’ll take butter over the fake chemical margarine I can’t digest. I don’t like putting chems in my body any more than I have to.
Coconut oil has a low burn temp, where as Grape Seed oil is a higher burn temp, and is actually good for you, I like it better than Olive Oil.
If you don’t want to ingest Coconut oil use it on your skin for dry skin. Great moisturizer, just be sure to pat dry after.
Since I’m sea food allergic fish oil is a NO.
He’s always right, does great research.
Look up the “U” shaped sodium - mortality graph.
They will have to PRY my Coffee out of my cold dead hands. Working on cup #3, straight up black.
Salt now I do watch as I’ve got Meniere’s and it does effect that. As it does a heart patient.
Just fry your bacon in it for balance. It's all good!
They are pushing more Cholesterol meds. Yet not 1 will raise your HDL. Hubby’s is the bottom of the barrel and we eat in moderation. While mine is up there at 70 or higher.
NOTE: he takes a baby aspirin every night, he has plaque in his arteries...I use K2 Complex to force my bones to retain the calcium, and have none. Even my OP scores have improved on just bone Vits/Mins, where as their OP drugs sent me to the ER with A-Fib. The K2 Complex acts along with the D3 as a blood thinner too.
Brawndo! It's got electrolytes!
