Woodstock Photos From 1969, History Books Won’t Show You

On August 15, 1969 more than 400,000 people flocked to a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, for “3 days of music and peace.” Woodstock became a cultural icon representing the spirit of many of the young generation at the time. Check out some pictures from the event to see how crazy it actually was!

Peace Out Wallkill, Hello Bethel

Woodstock was originally supposed to take place in Wallkill, Orange County, New York. However, the town board quickly passed a bill stating you must have permit in order to host any event over 5,000. A permit was applied for but was denied because the plan for the portable toilets were called inadequate. A dairy farmer in New York heard about the concert and its planning issues and offered up his farm for the event. Good thing, because the event saw a lot more than 5,000 people.

Dairy Farmer Turned Hero

As stated before a dairy farmer in Sullivan County, New York, had heard about this concert and its issues. He offered his farm land as a space for the concert. His name was Max Yasgur and he was paid $75,000 for all 3 days. He is quoted as saying “If we join them, we can turn those adversities that are the problems of America today into a hope for a brighter and more peaceful future…” When Yasgur died he received a full page obituary in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The question is would he have “joined” them if they didn’t pay him 75 grand. Give me a break.

“How long did the stench last?”

Reports say three years.

I urge everyone here to read what I think is one of the best sections I’ve ever written, our 2-3 page chapter on the Woodstock era in “A Patriot’s History of the United States.”

There is a very good, long section also in a total loony lefty’s book, “You Say You Want a Revolution.” He criticized Woodstock for being faux left, with artists flying in via helicopter and praising people for hanging out, then going back to their hotels with caviar and partying.

Admittedly they were still less annoying than SJWs.

Was there a measurable increase of special needs children born nine months later? Around May 1970?

The U.S. Air Force airlifted food, medical teams, and performers to the event

Yeah, I remember those days. Filthy hippies denouncing "the man" and capitalism yet would go into town to beg food and money from "the man" and capitalistic stores. Such losers.

Lots of ordinary college kids were there to hear the super bands of the time. Certainly not all “smelly hippies.”

Thanks for saying that. I would have gone for the music, but probably would have turned around on the road and gone home because of traffic and overwhelming crowd.

One of the things leftover from the the 1960’s is Woodstock. While they had some great music it wasn’t all that great as far as the planning for it went.

Down in Atlanta the same year was the Atlanta International Pop Festival held over the July 4th weekend with as many as 150,000 in attendance. The lineup was:

Blood, Sweat & Tears
Booker T. & the M.G.’s
The Butterfield Blues Band
Canned Heat
Chicago Transit Authority
Joe Cocker
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Dave Brubeck Trio w/ Gerry Mulligan
Delaney and Bonnie and Friends
Grand Funk Railroad
Ian & Sylvia
Tommy James and the Shondells
Janis Joplin
Al Kooper
Led Zeppelin
Pacific Gas & Electric
Johnny Rivers
Spirit
The Staple Singers
Sweetwater
Ten Wheel Drive
Johnny Winter

in 1970, held again over the 4th of July weekend ,the Atlanta Pop Festival, after taking note of what happened at Woodstock, had an even bigger music festival, at least 600,000 attended and it was planned out to avoid as many of the problems as possible that happened at Woodstock and was a huge success. Yet you don’t hear much about it.

The lineup for 1970 was :

The Allman Brothers Band
Ballin’ Jack
Bloodrock
Bloomsbury People
Cactus
Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys
Chakra
Chambers Brothers
Goose Creek Symphony
Grand Funk Railroad
Gypsy
Memphis State University cast of “Hair”
Hampton Grease Band
Handle
Richie Havens
Hedge & Donna
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
It’s a Beautiful Day
Johnny Jenkins
B.B. King
Lee Michaels
Mott the Hoople
Mountain
Poco
Procol Harum
Radar
Rare Earth
Terry Reid
Rig
Savage Grace
John Sebastian
Bob Seger System
Spirit
Ten Years After
U.S. Kids
Johnny Winter

The Allman Brothers opened and closed the event.

Take a look at the acts booked both years, really impressive and in some ways much better than what was at Woodstock.

If I had been able I would have been at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival.

That was one of the problems, they did not have many and the planning for the event was terribly poor.

I am surprised the number was only 400K. That seems so small considering how huge the story has become. I would have thought multi-millions.

Woodstock was a disgusting event. The people who attended it were disgusting.
Every single one of them? That's a pretty broad brush, Mr. Happy.

Aw, who wouldn't want to be a part of the

Rain and mud...

...watching those on their weird LDS trips...

...and abandoned cars?

Hey, they may have not been there, but some politicians live Woodstock every day!

Post 36 - I agree with your statement, “Neither party understands that their core platforms are out of date.” May I add here, it’s very hurtful for a core supporter of a party to read the current budget plan of that party and see it plans to hurt them worse than the Democrat plan had been doing. Not very smart of the Republican party.
