LAKE ERIE WATER LEVEL UP TO 574 FEET, CLOSE TO RECORD HIGH

Lake Erie water levels have risen to a near record high, causing flood concern for nearby homeowners.

Cleveland.com reports Lake Erie's last reading put the body of water at 574 feet (175 meters), just 7.3 inches (19 centimeters) shy of an all-time high in 1986.

Environmental officials say heavy rains and months of melting snow are responsible for the recent hike in water levels. They say high water levels will surge even more if strong storms continue to drench the region.

Residents with lakefront properties say they've lost patios and staircases due to the rising water and subsequent flooding.

If the water level was even higher in 1986, why in the world did they later build stairways and patios below that level ?

I have lost my beach, stairs and land. Its not that they we built below that level, the lake is so high that the waves are taking out everything in its path· The jetty that is in the water and normally has a drop of 3-4 ft to the water is now completely submerged and is a hazard to the anywater craft that decides to troll close to shore.

In order to have melting snow, you first must have snow.

When I was about 12, (1975) I lived near Lake St. Clair in Michigan. (Just north of Detroit River)

Water levels got so high that the Army Corps of Engineers built wooded Dykes along the shoreline for miles. Must have been some pre-global warming.

Melting snow and heavy rainfall causes lake levels to rise.

Huh imagine that ?

Fluctuating water levels in Lake Erie are routine. A few years ago they were near a low, and alarmists were yammering about climate change. No doubt we will hear some of this now as well.

Why do people build houses in known flood plains? Prudence and foresight are often in short supply.

Then you should put a buoy on it.

Lake Erie was very polluted in the 1960’s. It is now some of the best Muskie fishing in the world.

Most of Lake Erie is only about 35’ deep except in the very middle. The water volume is not nearly what the other great lakes can hold. There is only so much that can go over Niagara falls.
