To the editor: So Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the City Council of New Orleans feel that the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was a public nuisance? (New Orleans removes a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from its perch of 133 years, May 19)
Good thing Landrieu is not mayor of Washington, where the Vietnam Veterans Memorial represents a period of public divisiveness. It has been called the memorial that nobody wanted except the Vietnam vets.

During the Civil War, in New Orleans, US General Butler was so popular the people placed his photo in places of honor, like thunder mugs, chamber pots and pee pots.

Let’s be honest, they hate Grant, too, as a white male homophobe.
The US Army even named tanks after Lee and JEB Stuart. The Lee is what Bogart used in SAHARA.
The Sherman, on the other hand, was known as the Ronson Lighter. One hit and it would light up.
Never accuse a Democrat, leftist, or social justice warrior of being straight on history - ever.
Grant sold the only slave he owned in 1858.
As I recall, when it was first proposed, some voiced that opinion. But what happened, when it was finished, and open to the public, it became very much hallowed ground.
Relatives and friends of the warriors listed came, took photos and "rubbings" of the names; and cried!
I was there, I saw it.
Veterans, like myself came, were touched by the event and not just the wall itself. I still remember that feeling, right now, at a mellow 75. My son (Ace) and I lived in the D.C. area. Every Memorial weekend we would go down in the evening. It would be sadly magical and we always carried a roll of $5.00 bills to put in the "tip jars" of the Vietnam vets who had little displays of memorabilia around the mall. This year, I'm going, for the first time; and with my grandson, to the Vietnam memorial wall in Shepherd, MI, my retirement "home town."
>>Where in New Orleans is the Ulysses S. Grant statue?<<
Don’t know that there is one, but as you undoubtedly know Grant’s Tomb is in NYC. A decade or so ago it fell into such a state of neglect that the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization offered to come to NY and help clean it up.
“That has to be the most insulting, stupid, offensive thing anyone could say about that memorial.”
Back in the day, there was a lot of opposition to that design.
Actually I think that was a Grant tank in Sahara. The Russians had a memorable nickname for those.
Which led to General Order No. 28:
"As the officers and soldiers of the United States have been subject to repeated insults from the women (calling themselves ladies) of New Orleans in return for the most scrupulous non-interference and courtesy on our part, it is ordered that hereafter when any female shall by word, gesture, or movement insult or show contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States she shall be regarded and held liable to be treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation."
I would agree except he blew it in the most crucial time at Gettysburg. I think America’s greatest battlefield General is a toss up between Sherman, Patton, Stonewall Jackson and Andrew Jackson with Lee, McArthur, Grant close behind.
The difference being that the Grant variant of M-3 Medium tank had a more modern turret and slightly lower profile.
IIRC the Russians referred to the ones sent to them for use by the Red Army as "A coffin for five brothers"
Let me throw in Winfield Scott!
Wellington said that Scott’s campaign from Vera Cruz to Mexico City was one of the greatest feats of generalship he had ever seen. Remember this man fought Napoleon!
Another forgotten American general whose victory with a pitifully small army secured a vast territory. Should be the icon of military special operations - George Rogers Clark!
Unlikely. The cadets aren't in New Orleans or St. Louis and have more important stuff to do than take a trip just to see statues, so any effect would be nonexistent.
The context might include battlefields and historic sites, but not every statue located around the country.
But you do raise an important point: what will happen with the Lee and Jackson portraits at West Point and other military bases or with Confederate memorials at National Battlefield Parks?
Bullshit. He didn’t end any tyranny, freed no one and did his level best to destroy the nation. He’s lucky Lincoln didn’t hang him.
Oh, then that’s OK
It’s true that Lee couldn’t end Lincoln’s tyranny but considering his generalship couldn’t overcome the disparity in resources.
You are correct. Since Lee couldn’t stop the northern invasion he deserves no statue. ;).
I hate FR threads about CW1 because it shows me so many will refuse the call of patriots to CW2 that will come. Few here can understand that, at the time, support for the state was more important than support to the feds
I wish they'd scrap that stupid nurse's statue but you can't have everything.
