A man is suing American Airlines for $100,000 after he was crushed by two obese passengers during a 14-hour flight and left with permanent back and neck injuries.

Michael Anthony Taylor, 67, claims airline staff refused to let him change seats on the flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, despite his desperate pleas to move.

The Wollongong man says he was forced to crouch, kneel, brace and stand throughout the lengthy flight, which also aggravated his existing condition of curvature of the spine.

It’s a perfect storm. The average passenger girth has expanded at the same time airline seats have been zapped by the shrink ray.

You’d think with the shrink ray also hitting the ice cream containers and candy packaging that it would all balance out, but no.

This guy should have flown JAL, which partners with AA. Reduces the risk of these situations to almost zero.

Just like they have the “brackets” to test the size of your carry one luggage to see if it complies, they should have the same thing for passengers. If you cannot fit in, you cannot board.

And it’s not like most people can conceivably upgrade to first class, it’s unbelievable how much first class costs. That must be their big profit point, else they wouldn’t keep making First Class bigger and Economy smaller.

Bad year to be an airline!

I had one once, too. They gave him the seat belt extender — I never even knew such a thing existed. He tried to lower the tray table and it only moved about two inches! I still remember that flight 30 years later!

Agreed. If a fat/obese person takes up more than 1 seat .. make them buy two seats and to BLAZES with any complaint. It is a comfort issue for passengers next to them and a safety issue for all the passengers and flight crew.

Too many two ton Tessies and the plane could experience substantial flight/safety issues.

The airline should have tried to be accommodating, seeking other passengers who might be willing to trade seats.

Airlines? Accommodating?

I was not entombed by gelatinous people, but I did get stuck in a rearward window seat on a long shot from Mumbai to Amsterdam, and had a lengthy inner confrontation with claustrophobia. I fought the temptation to spring up and open the rear hatch.

Just have to have wide shoulders or be tall.

Both apply to me. I get an aisle seat so I can lean into the aisle rather than having my shoulders extend into the center seat. And the person in front of me can't recline as my knees are flush against the back of their seat.

The airlines will be glad to improve their plane seating and stop overbooking - but it will come with a huge increase in fares. Only business passengers will pay them.

Time to build those supersonic trains. They could have sleeping cars and restaurants for long journeys. Kids’ play areas too. Like land cruises:)

I’ll drive up to 12 hours. If it’s longer than that, I fly.

does anyone know the name
of the pilot or the old hag
that caused nice Mr Taylor
such trauma?

Same here. I’m 6’-7” and I’m completely mashed in like a sardine. I’m absolutely miserable flying especially if I can’t get the emergency exit row.

And if they would take a little off their plate more often, then they would not be that large.

My point is that no passenger should be allowed to take up a seat or part of a seat they have not paid for.

I may sympathize with them but I should not have to suffer because of them.
