The Texas Senate has approved a bill that would eliminate the state's mandatory safety inspections for most vehicles.
Texas is one of slightly more than a dozen states that still require safety inspections that test for things like properly-working horns, brakes and brake lights, headlights and seat belts. According to a Senate study, more than 500,000 vehicles didn't pass safety inspection in 2014 and 2015.

GOOD !
Cops are very good at making sure your vehicle is in proper working order. Just another layer of needless bureaucracy & govt fees.
Good for Texas!
Here in Massholechusetts we pay $35 for this nonsense every year. The last time I had my car inspected I barely sat down in the waiting room before the mechanic came in with my change and keys letting me know my car had passed. It is nothing more than a revenue grab.
It’s way past time for this scam to end. When you are five years behind OK in rescinding this worthless law, you are really stupid.
Ping!
“According to a Senate study, more than 500,000 vehicles didn’t pass safety inspection in 2014 and 2015.”
Have these people lost their mind? I live in Texas and really don’t mind the safety inspection as it may find a problem that could cost $$$$ in the future and may prevent an accident. The problem is there is there use to be a lot of phony inspection stickers for sale. I think their new method of reporting inspections to the license bureau will fix that.
Good. Hope NC is next.
EXCELLENT!!! Past time to stop this ripoff scam!
That’s only 250,000 a year out of about 25 million vehicles, that is only 1%, cry me a river.
CA doesn’t even have Vehicle Safety Inspections, never has.
We do have those lovely Emissions Checks whenever you sell a Vehicle. If it doesn’t Pass, the New Owner cannot Register it.
We also have Bi-annual Emissions Checks for Cars over five years old.
Does CA leave out VW diesels?
In Maryland, if I remember correctly you get your car inspected when you purchase it.
After that... you’ll be spot checked at any time. Traffic stop, sobriety checks, accident response etc... bad tires, blown lights... etc... big fines are going to occur, plus an additional inspection after the problem has been corrected.
But... emissions in some regions are yearly.
A ripoff everywhere! Here in Michigan we used to have emission testing which was finally terminated.
The last car I had to have tested (It was only about 5 years old) failed the first test but when I took it to another station, it passed..........
Chicago in the 40’s actually had this and it was a joke. For a couple of bucks left on the seat on the drivers side everyone passed. They got rid of it.
Nope. That’s a whole other can of worms I’m sure.
They do Diesel Emission checks too as far as I know.

No thanks- I’ll get my car checked myself.
Not to join the posting police, but I think you mean biennial (once every two years, not twice a year).
Are you a native Texan?
If not, how long have you lived in Texas?
TIA.
Loved it for my son’s sake when tires were part of the inspection.
