Should we bring back the draft?
In the wake of another Memorial Day, when most Americans recognized their fallen veterans by staying home from the office, it’s worth taking a moment to consider a perennial question: Should the military draft return? Yes, argued Joseph Epstein in The Atlantic earlier this year. Epstein, a short story writer and former draftee who served in the Army from 1958 to 1960, opposes an all-volunteer force for several reasons: It’s unfair for a tiny percentage of Americans—less than one percent—to shoulder the burden of fighting wars; the American public isn’t knowledgeable enough on foreign policy; the draft could rehabilitate young criminal offenders; and, most of all, a draft would contribute to the “melting pot” that makes America great.
Not a military draft, keep that as it is and add a national service draft. Train some for riot control, some for disaster recovery, some for wildland firefighting. Those not physically capable of those jobs will do office-related support work.
As a volunteer that signed up the day ground war started for GW1, I see the reasoning behind wanting to.
Instill a sense of discipline and love for country in those that would not otherwise have it.
But, I wouldn’t subject the people that already have it...and sign on the line without being forced to.....to the unending bullshiite that bringing these kids online would take.
Nope. Volunteers truly care about this country. They can take care of the workload. If they start thinking they can’t take it, they’re just going to work harder.

How about the drug pushers/gangbangers...you want these bottom of the barrel thugs helping themselves to stuff, while on "duty" to help with disasters?
What about the heroin addicts, pot smokers, completely mentally and physically unfit ( many kids are functional illiterates today and physically soft )to do office work?

It was a sort of culture shock when I came out of the Rangers, where everyone was a multiple volunteer and went to a regular leg infantry unit for a while, where a lot of the privates (and even some of the Junior NCOs) were draftees or ‘enlist or jail types’.
I can understand what you saw. In Nam, me and all the other the NCO’s in my Company were enlisted and the older guys were “Lifers”.
seems the more draftees, the better the results.
WW1 - draftees = 72%
WWII - draftees = 61.2% (According to the National WWII Museum) some say it was 66%
Korea - draftees = 53%
Vietnam - draftees = 25%
now, in answer to the question: I was drafted. I believe I am better for it.
Not so sure the Country or the Marines were.
So, personally ? yes.
For the good of the country? no, for now.

And it’s “some” of the baby boomers, not all.
There are gang members and jihadi candidates already using the voluntary military as a training camp for post service “work”.

“National service draft”? Isn’t that involuntary servitude?
The incentivized way to work this would be to say for every year you serve in the military you get a year of tax exempt income no matter what is earned, for some type of national service you get 6 months/year.

Yes! Everyone from ages 18-30 should serve 4 years.. Makes a man or woman out of you!
We would not have won WW2 without it. It puts everyone’s sons in danger as long as there are no exceptions. Of course boot camp would have to be 9 months long to get these kids squared away....but now would be the time to do it. Trump won’t mandate tranny safe room training, and Mad Dog would turn out some fighting men to be proud of.
No. Conscripts have traditionally made bad soldiers.
