Don't install our buggy Windows 10 Creators Update, begs Microsoft (Update on the Update)

How to force Windows 10 to download the Creators Update (for those who just can't wait)
Executive Summary: "DO NOT FORCE THE DOWNLOAD!! PLEASE WAIT!!"
Best FRegards, Dayglored

Microsoft has urged non-tech-savvy people – or anyone who just wants a stable computer – to not download and install this year's biggest revision to Windows by hand. And that's because it may well bork your machine.

It's been two weeks since Microsoft made its Creators Update available, and we were previously warned it will be a trickle-out rather than a massive rollout. Now, Redmond has urged users to stop manually fetching and installing the code, and instead wait for it to be automatically offered to your computer when it's ready.

The problem is that some systems – particularly older ones – may not be able to handle the Creators Update, Microsoft said. The US giant has been focusing on updating newer kit first, since it feels that hardware is less likely to run into difficulties, and has thus stopped offering the latest Windows 10 upgrade to computers it suspects may suffer from breakdowns.

For example, the big update has already run into problems with some types of Broadcom Bluetooth LE radios: the code was killing connections with accessories, apparently. So Microsoft stopped pushing automatic downloads to computers carrying that hardware. However, the operating system can still be fetched manually if folks really want it.

In other words, if people fetch and install the software by hand, they will bypass Redmond's blockades, and potentially run aground on their hardware.

"We continue to recommend (unless you're an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you," John Cable, director of program management for Windows servicing and delivery, said on Tuesday.

"When your device becomes eligible for the Creators Update rollout, you'll be prompted to make some important choices on your privacy settings before the Creators Update can install."

According to advertising stats counter AdDuplex, around 10 per cent of Windows machines are running the Creators Update. As you'd expect, Microsoft's own hardware is getting it first, with 30 per cent of Surface Books and a quarter of Surface Pro 4s having been updated.

That Microsoft is calling for a halt to manual updates so soon suggests there are still irritating bugs in the code to iron out. On the one hand, it's a relief Redmond isn't shoving out broken tech to everyone at once leading to a global meltdown. On the other hand, it is seriously weird that the biz has been hyping up an operating system release that today still isn't ready for the mainstream.

Only one in ten machines are running the new code, and the Office 365 giant has already told people to hit the brakes. This is despite the product undergoing months of internal and public testing.

It's another example of Microsoft trying to treat its core product, the bedrock of its business, as nothing more than shifting sands of ones and zeroes. This is a great pity because Windows 10, at its heart, has stronger cybersecurity defenses and other kernel-level improvements – it's just everything around it is constantly changing and so hard to pin down, it's a confusing mess half the time.

Microsoft's enterprise customers won't be getting the update for months, thankfully. Instead, it is consumers and small businesses who are being used as livestock to clear the minefield. Moo. ®

Yeah, I know, The Register is always a little breathless and a little over-the-top, but I feel bad for having encouraged you guys to download the Creators Update, so I'm trying to avoid anybody getting in trouble over it.

Thanks,
Dayglored

Is Microsoft ever going to Update Windows 10 so we can easily alphabetize our Favorites as we add or delete them?

Great! Microsoft isn't saying that ALL older machines WILL have trouble, only that SOME older machines MAY have trouble, and that it's worth being cautious and waiting for them to vet the new release before everyone grabs it unvetted.

Well, they're British, and easily excitable. But I don't think anything in the article is untrue. What did you find that was false?

I have not downloaded Creators’ update, and given that I had to restore my machine to factory settings once already (Windows 7), meaning that I had to PURCHASE Windows 10 the second time around, I will not be doing so.

Got me. They're rolling out features and capabilities a little at a time, and I expect that process to continue indefinitely, since they're trying to position Windows as a "subscription service", not a "buy-it-and-you're-done" product.

I've heard that patience is a virtue... :-)

The only ‘puter in our system that’s W10 is the laptop that’s used to communicate with Grandma’s business partners through Outlook. (They picked it, not Grandma....)

...and no, I don’t like *this* Outlook any more than I did the previous versions, although Redmond seems to have finally discovered SpamBlockers after all of these decades.

This bit of news re Creators Update just pushed my schedule for UNIX up to the top of the pile.

I may leave W10 on that laptop, but that crass violation of the KISS principle is only going to be there as a backup and that only until I can get Outlook to play nice in whatever pew of UNIX I select.

Bull....

I’m too old to play these sillya$$ games.....

I noticed that MS tried 25 times on 25 April to install the latest update to my computer and failed each and every time. My computer is only six months old. This isn’t the first time an update to my computer has failed to install. The first time I found a work around to successfully install the update but can’t seem to find it this time. I’ll just wait until they fix the issue and assume it is their issue and not my computer. I don’t, currently, see a problem with W10 on my machine.

SCCM still can’t manually push major version updates to Windows 10 successfully. They better fix that or major enterprises will be on the anniversary update forever.

One of the biggest problems microsoft has with these updates is their update mechanism. Compared to apt or yum, it’s just a primitive mess.

This is true.

I use apt and yum exclusively from Bash because I can't stand the stupid user-friendly GUI interfaces people have written to hide them. They're just as bad as the "Windows Update" GUI, IMO. Gimme a damn Bash prompt, thank-you-very-much!

Frankly, I'm ready to start using the various command line utilities that manage checking for, downloading, and installing Windows updates. I have spent far too many hours of my life already, waiting for that damn "no progress" bar. We hates it, we does.
