Can the Dodge Demon really do 0 to 60 mph in 2.1 seconds? Let's break it down (2 fastest, American)

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was one of the most hyped new-car launches in recent memory, but Dodge followed that hype with some bold performance claims. For one, Dodge said the Demon can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph faster than any production car.

But like Dodge's claim that the Demon was banned from drag racing, there's more to the story. Dodge said the Demon does 0 to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds. Yet Motor Trend recently got a Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous Mode to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 2.28 seconds. What gives?

With this low first gear they had to be running slicks and not street tires.

Our pastor at a small rural church back in the 50s was a retired President of a seminary. He had PHD from Yale.

One Sunday, he and his wife arrived in a new Chrysler. It turned out their Son was a chief engineer at Chrysler. Maybe 30 years later I saw a program on the History Channel about the M1 Abrams tank and it’s development.

The guy they interviewed was head of the development team and they gave his name as Dr. Phillip Lett. I immediately recognized that he looked just like our old preacher. I phoned Mother and confirmed that Dr. Lett’s Son was named Phillip.

I am pretty sure he was at least in part responsible for the turbine engine which Chrysler developed back then.

“I don’t see anywhere where I saidcrhey were real.”

You presented them as fact trying to dispute my post.

Your post: Not according to Road and Track.

“With this low first gear they had to be running slicks and not street tires.”

They were running street-legal drag radials.

And that gearing is used even on their trucks.

“It is a bit of a joke, Dodge makes a one trick pony for bragging rights, ignoring the fact that a Mazda Miata could run away from it at the first set of turns.”

They don’t ignore it. The advertise it as for the drag strip.

Right on their page: “Every feature was chosen to optimize drag strip performance.”

“ignoring the fact that a Mazda Miata could run away from it at the first set of turns.”

The Miata would be so far back it wouldn’t make a difference.

I guess the big difference is the Tesla can make one or two full throttle runs, and then needs to find an electrical plug.

“Any car can hit 0-60 in under 3 seconds if you throw it off a cliff”

I wanted to do that with a couple of my cars...

The wars are back. If you look at the NHRA they have classes with new Mustangs, Camaros, & Challengers. I believe they would be in the S/S class. They run somewhere in the 8 second range. You can see them on youtube if you are interested.

Where was it said they were in a drag race? The point is that the car is useless but for one thing. Beyond that, it is dead meat for a well rounded car.

Not saying he was not, but I recall seeing one of those turbine cars in the early 60's. Dunno when the M1 was designed.

A good read on that car and the history would be interesting. Sure came and went quick. Factory demo cars distributed to a list of somebodies.

uh, the track has straights. Have you ever watched IMSA racing. The Miata’s corner great but are not competitive with the Mustangs.

He was referring to the preacher’s son.

You should probably read up on the Demon before spouting off.

Despite being somewhat "fat," the Demon is good at more than just blasting down a dragstrip into the sunset. In fact, it can brake harder than a Dodge Viper ACR.

The Viper ACR takes 101 feet to go from 60 to 0 mph. The Demon does the same thing in just 97 feet.

Not only that, but the Demon handles, too.

"You put this car into Sport mode, this car has amazing handling. This car will pull 1 g on the skid pad. This car will handle better than a Hellcat," Tim Kuniskis, head of passenger cars at FCA North America, told Motor Authority.

So, the next time someone makes fun of the Demon's weight, feel free to remind them it will bring them to a halt faster than the world-beating Viper ACR and it will pull a lateral g on the skidpad.

Not bad for more than two tons of American iron.
