WEST TOWN — During a swimming lesson at a canine aquatic center in West Town, a dog drowned and his owner alleges her family's pet was not aided with CPR that could have saved the dog's life.
"What started as an exciting swimming lesson, ended in a tragedy and a traumatic experience that my family and I will never forget," said Paula Cano, a Maywood resident whose 3-year-old Doberman, Diego, died around 9:15 p.m. on March 31 at Doggy Paddle, 1330 W. Willow St.
Cano said Diego — who had never been in a swimming pool but enjoyed wading in the water at Montrose Beach — initially resisted, and that was her "first red flag" at the start of the lesson in a pool with Diego's "cousin" Piper, a boxer mix, who was with another instructor in the same pool.

Didn’t read the entire thing because it sounded like more stupidity comping from Cali.
Sorry the dog drowned but the owner should have done so 1st and the dog would have never been put in a pool.
I thought dogs instinctively knew how to swim.
I have never heard of doggie swimming lessons.

Dogs don’t need to be taught how to swim. Paying someone to teach them is stupid. The losers are the ones who would pay for this.

Dropping them into a pool where they can not feel the bottom is stupidity and as demonstrated have a deadly result.

Ours loves to jump in a creek and swim around a bit. As far as I know she never took lessons and she never saw another dog model the behavior.

I’ve had Golden Retrievers that taught themselves to swim quite easily and naturally, first wading in a pond and then they just start swimming. I never heard of giving a dog swimming lessons. Maybe only certain breeds take well to the “doggy paddle”????
Interesingly, I did have one Golden who absolutely refused to swim. He would wade along the edge of the pond, always refusing to go very deep even as he watched his brother merrily swimming around the deep parts of the pond. It was quite a wonder to see how many times he could watch his brother swim and yet never decide to join in the fun. His brother would fetch sticks and balls all over the pond, but he would only try for them when they came within reach in the shallow waters.
Due to vagaries of their conformation, not all breeds are capable swimmers.
That’s why water dog breeds are always wide bodied, double coated and stocky.
The Dobermann is one of the breeds who are not good in water.
Their deep chests, narrow bodies and low body fat ratio makes swimming difficult for them.

Pugs and Bulldogs are too front-heavy to swim, as another example.
The stupid ass morons who took their dog to do this, in the first place, are solely to blame.
It’s repeated several times, how the trainers had to “force” the terrified dog into the pool.
If anyone ‘forced’ my Dobermanns to do something that terrified them or could harm them, I would tear their throats out with my bare hands.
But hey...that’s just me.
I have zero “pity” for the broken hearted owners.
They may as well have just shot the dog, themselves.
There are highly reputable and useful facilities for water therapy for dogs with arthritis, dysplasia and other joint conditions.
It is a useful therapy for an ailing dog.

Back in the 80s, I was walking the towpath with my Wonder Dobe and my fiance.
It was February and very cold.
The fiance tossed the Wonder Dobe’s beloved tennis ball into the canal and the dog instinctively jumped in after it and proceeded to start drowning.
I immediately screamed at the fiance to ‘get my dog out ALIVE’ and literally kicked him into the canal, with the dog.
He got the dog out and I rushed him to the car, where I dried him with the fiance’s very nice golf jacket.
The fiance’ was cold, shivering and soaking wet.
I did not care.
He nearly killed my dog.
To this day, he wonders why I never married him.

boxer mix! Boxers are notorious for not being able to swim, for some reason.
The only time I knew of swimming pool lessons for dogs was people would take their dogs in the built in pool so the dogs could learn where the steps were and how to get out. But we were always right there to help the dog figure it out.
Did these peole just throw the dog in the pool and go for a latte? Something doesnt make sense.
