The population of Denver has been steadily growing over the past few years, but not enough of its new inhabitants want to work in the restaurant industry.
The reason? The higher-paying jobs are in weed, man.
New eateries are popping up all over Denver to meet the increased demand of residents and tourists, but restaurant owners claim theyre having a hard time filling their kitchens with able-bodied workers, Bloomberg reports.
Our work force is being drained by the pot industry, Denver restaurateur Bryan Dayton told the site.
Enter the weed business, which pays $22 an hour with full benefits, added Dayton. You can come work in a kitchen for (me) for eight hours a day, in a hot kitchen. Its a stressful life. Or you can go sort weed in a climate-controlled greenhouse. Its a pretty obvious choice.
So why dont restaurant owners just pay a little more? Quite simply, the marijuana industry can generally afford to pay workers at various levels much higher wages, they argue.

“Many of the founding fathers smoked hemp....”
Washington, Jefferson, & Adams gathered around the hookah? Like saying there were Muslims among the Founders.
Sorry, ain’t buying it.
Wow, I missed WMarhsal’s comment about the founding fathers smoking hemp. I saw a supposed quote from Thomas Jefferson about that a year or two ago and thought “hmmmm, I sort of doubt that!” so looked it up, there is a site where Jefferson quotes can be checked. Probably other old dead white guys have such sites. Anyway, Jefferson SAID NO SUCH THING.
Why would they smoke fiber hemp anyway, all you would get is a sore throat...
But it’s a totally made up fairy tale invented by doped out libertarians who want an historical excuse for their dope habit.
“A drunk driver will blow right past a stop sign. A stoned driver will wait for it to turn green.”
;^)
Two words/phrases that never belong in the same sentence...”hard working” and “pothead”.
“Restaurants will have to pay their workers enough to compete with the pot growers.”
$22 per hour is more than double what restaurants pay in this CO town. One must wonder if restaurants can take that hit.
In Boulder 40 years ago I made enough cooking in upscale restaurants to live pretty well as a single guy. That means I had purchasing power equal to more than $22 per hour.
Perhaps inflation drove up costs to the point that restaurants can no longer pay that much.
Bars in Colorado are doing just fine with the smoking ban.
They all have smoking patios.
Dopers sense of time and distance gets all messed up, can’t react quickly, and all other kinds of sensory perception gets bolluxed. Plus a lot of people smoke mj and drink alcohol or mix it with other drugs.
A stoned driver is just as dangerous as a drunk driver.
People like to imagine all dopers as mellow but that’s not the case.
Employee wages is only half the equation.
Employers also known as managers, are incredibly UNEDUCATED. People and their enabling government falsely believe that you obtain the position then govern others.
Managers are quite incompetant, and competition weeds them out. Most bosses could not manage their own life, let alone another. You have to educate yourself or else fail.
Ah....yes that is how restaurants and bars adapted here in Toronto once the smoking ban came in but guess what the patios eventually were made smoke free as well along with public parks. How enforceable the parks rule is I don’t know but it will be interesting to see how things shake out. The upcoming legalization of mj will produce lots of new adaptations. The libs initially proposed that those using med mj could smoke anywhere they wanted regardless of smoking bans but they got a lot of pushback on that and retreated that typically insane idea.
“When you have indulged herb you are famished.”
That’s not always true. In fact, it can be nothing more than a stereotype. I use cannabis as medicine. I never get the munchies.
“They are saying the waiters and cooks are stoned and cant cook or serve right, not that people arent hungry.”
Don’t know who “they” are but nothing in the posted article suggests such a thing.
“The problem is these jobs produce nothing of real value to society.”
Bullshite! It’s a new & growing industry & people are making lots of cash in the process. People work their hours & get paid just like in any other field. Bills get paid, people make purchases, businesses get built up just like in any other field.
Sell weed too.
This new weed they are growing will turn you into a liberal with only two or three tokes. No way am I smoking that crap. I prefer a good bottle of scotch, alcohol is the only safe drug for a conservative.
Euro style outdoor tables, after dinner tokes and cheetos..revenue upn lol
Maybe a cheeto bath for trump dissenters
3. Jeff Sessions group comes in and shuts the whole operation down.
A cruise offers the thought that you are traveling somewhere in a protected manner.
Highly dubious statement,
The street drugs are no taxed so they are 40 to 50 dollars cheaper.
“This new weed they are growing will turn you into a liberal with only two or three tokes.”
I’ve been using cannabis daily as medicine since 2015. Still a thankful Catholic & still conservative.
And where does the money come from to purchase the pot?A lot of it comes from break-ins and other crimes.I think this is a net loss to the country.
