Paranoid New Yorkers now have a speedy way out of the city should disaster strike.

Chris Dowhie, co-owner of Plan B Marine, runs a marine evacuation service which advertises the fastest possible way out of Manhattan.

Whether it’s power failure, blackouts, grid failure, bad weather, flooding or a terrorist attack, Dowhie’s clients want to be prepared for doomsday.

Pier closures - Oh, right, if you’re not taking one of the authorized public ferries, you’re not leaving by water.

A boat does not necessarily need a pier. Just come close to land and have your VIP jump on.

And have sharp pikes to communicate that ONLY the VIP gets to jump on.

Oh, that’s easy: he extends an invite to the families of new people to get them out. That way there’ll be an earlybird window of opportunity.

In a major SHTF disaster, motorized travel of any variety will be unreliable at best. Between gov restrictions on airspace, roads, and piers, and crazed mobs assaulting anything they think will get them out, this Plan B service sounds iffy. It’s probably going to be Shank’s Mare, or if you’re in a very tall building close to the river you might be able to arrange a cannon-fired zipline to at least get across the water. Other than that, I dunno. Maybe Doc Savage’s old pneumatic tubes to get to the waterfront, but they supposedly went to the harbor side, not the river, which won’t help much.

In these scenarios, it takes time for people to realize that the situation is real, that it has implications that affect them, and that they need to take action.

For most people that takes several hours to several days.

If people have a plan, they can walk a couple of miles to get to a boat and get away.

They hard part is having a plan, making the decision, and executing it soon enough to be effective.

So how is the rich person able to get to the pier where the so called SHTF boat is docked?

When was it when much of the NE had a power blackout? I live in S.E. Michigan, north of Detroit and it took me over four hours to drive the 17 miles from work to home. When the street lights are out, you have major gridlock.

That was really spooky, After everyone eventually arrived home, it was like everyone disappeared from the face of the earth. The 8 lane highway by my house was dark from no lights and not one vehicle driving on it..........

Recognizing that the situation really is dire and making the decision is the hard part, people don’t want to look like fools and pulling the trigger on some evacuation service is not going to be anything but an expensive proposition. So, most will wait too long.

What about just keeping an inflatable raft in a bug out bag? Then, scramble on down to the waters edge, push off, and PADDLE like heck!!!

I agree with that. If you live in a large city You must be packed and on the road ASAP. You can always come back if things calm down.

Think back to Hurricane Katrina. The ones that fared best walked north. Instead, it was like the Poseiden Adventure. Most people mindlessly followed directions and ended up worse for it.

Perhaps the best way to leave Manhattan would be by walking or bicycling across a bridge....and keep on going. Bridges not passable? Swim or go to a Church and pray for eternal salvation.

I work in mid-town Manhattan and sadly I have no game-plan for SHTF. No secret tunnel off this island and I don’t rate a helicopter, boat or blimp. What I guess I could do is run 40 flights of stairs down to the ground level (if the elevators aren’t working) and grab a six-pack of beer at the Duane Reade. I’ll then stagger up to Central Park and see how it all ends. If I don’t run out of cellphone battery, I’ll post a photo or two here.

It takes hours to days for those items to be put into effect.

There simply are not enough government forces available on a moments notice to do all that you suggest.

Sending someone to man the boat at the news of a disaster would be an obvious course of action.

As an aside, a considerable number of engines are *not* susceptible to EMP pulses.

That’s a film I can watch repeatedly, too. Something about it just resonates.

All Americans got out but many of the select Vietnamese were screwed. The signal for Americans to get out was the American Radio Service* played “White Christmas.” This was at the end of April.
