I have had similar issues - our Mo. weather is equally fickle I guess. I was able to keep a few tomato branches going this winter, but got no blooms or tomatoes, so they may have been determinates.
We haven’t seen any of the daffodils here yet.
Interesting method. The vines do well at first, but then after the weather warms up a bit, the vines all of a sudden just collapse. This didn’t happen the first year. We only had a little blossom end rot.
After that first year, no success growing cukes, melons, squash.
Here in w. MI, I saw my first robin yesterday. Red-wing Blackbirds have also put in an appearance.
The daffodils are coming up, but no crocus yet.
We tapped our maples this week. I always look forward to tapping time. It’s time to crawl out of winter hibernation.
I think it would work, if you have adequate time before planting to let things meld. Hubby is just now working on clearing leaves, but he has several piles from last year that will be ready to use.
So this spring’s leaves will go into a new pile for use next year. He’ll add grass clippings etc all during the summer.

I don’t know. When that happens to me, I just assume it was old seed, and order new ones. Hasn’t happened to me since I started ordering from Baker’s Creek.
We have a couple of Maple trees, but have never tapped one. How much syrup can you get out of one tree?
Yesterday and today was in the 71’s - unusually warm for February in Delaware. I took advantage and raked all the leaves out of the garden. Going to wait on new soil (I’m a pessimist by heart and expect a big snowstorm any day.

Penny sounds wonderful! We had to put our beloved 16 year old to sleep in June. We adopted Ray in July at a rescue adoption. She is a doll & gets along w/ our 3 rescue cats & everyone else. They are the best.
It is very springtime & I want my winter back ; )

They finally have some varieties with decent resistance to it.
I’m in PA (Philly burbs) and also a weather pessimist — I just know there’s another snow storm waiting around the bend. This has been too nice a winter so far — 70 degrees in February? really??
Haven’t even looked at what needs done in the veggie garden yet, thinking of starting adding to the compost barrel this week but that’s about it. Daffodils are starting and I see buds on the quince. I envy those who have a longer, warmer growing season (and space for greenhouses and cold-frame beds) ahh, someday perhaps!
I had to put my Lynn-Dah (a 12 year old lab/chow rescue)to sleep back on November 2, 2016. I only lasted two days dogless, and combed over 4 shelters and several internet sites before I found Penny. It was meant to be.
