Russian airline Aeroflot has sparked outrage among its flight crew after banning as many as 400 'old, fat and ugly' stewardesses from prestigious foreign routes.
A group of angry cabin staff has written to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to complain about their alleged treatment, supposedly part of a 'rebranding' exercise by the country's national carrier.
Calling themselves STS - the Russian abbreviation for 'old, fat, ugly' - they say they are being prevented from flying on international routes, and instead given unfashionable domestic flights.
One attendant Yevgenia Magurina complained: 'They told us all that only the young and thin will fly abroad for Aeroflot.'

I remember flying PSA in California and all their stewardess wore miniskirts or hot pants. Back in a time you got dressed up to fly.
I worked with a flamer who had once been an air steward and was on the last US plane ever hijacked to Cuba.
He said once they had been cleared to leave Havana the Cubans disembarked them and ran all the passengers through the gift shop before allowing the plane to take-off.
In 1972, I ventured aboard an Aeroflot plane for a flight from St. Petersburg to East Berlin. The plane an Ilyushin 18, code named "Coot" by NATO. I had earlier flown on an East German Il-18 from East Berlin to Moscow. Both planes were about as luxurious as a city bus, and you had to shout to be heard by your seatmate because the motors were so loud. If you needed to use the head, it was located midships and the noise inside was deafening.
I found out later that the spartan conditions aboard the planes were to facilitate their conversion to military use if needed.
The East German plane offered cold cuts of beef for dinner, served on an aluminum tray, but the Soviet plane offered hardboiled eggs with caviar for breakfast. The stewardesses on both planes were young and good-looking, but couldn't compare with the ones on the Pan American flight I took from West Berlin to Frankfurt, one of whom was a black American who spoke German like a native.

Hey, if I am going to sit my middle-aged, bald, (slightly) overweight self on a plane then the person who brings me my drink & pretzels better have flawless looks & body! It only makes sense.
Back in the day when we were “coffee, tea or me” gals - as the line went back then - we weighed in before every flight and had a complete wardrobe inspection. Was gone before the hot pants and/or miniskirts hit the scene - but did fly once on a local California airline where hot pants were the uniform of the day. Fortunately every attendant on our flight looked great in them.
We were young, trim, single, ever smiling, wonderful hostesses and glad to welcome fliers aboard. Most flight attendants today IMO are way too old, too bossy, most often weigh too much and have little sense of how to be a gracious hostess. But then air travel today bears little resemblance to what it was in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.
High mileage and often pretty damn mean.
Singapore Air is tops! Business class is like First Class on other Airlines. Economy class is pretty damn good. I have flown first class on several airlines but only business class on Singapore Airlines. Business class on Singapore Airlines was superior to first class on the other airlines. They are the best. I hear Cathy Pacific is equal but I have never flown them.

Hey rip van winkle, they haven’t been communist for about 25 years. And we are one of the few nations on earth that doesn’t have a state airline. It’s rather common.
Flight attendants should IMO be hired and fired based solely on their looks, trim bodies, good hair and sex appeal. Don’t like it do something else. 59 is wayyyyyyy toooooo old!
No, the Russians aren’t going for anorexic sticks. They’ll be slender, hot, and sporting trophy racks. Just go look and see.
Fine. No problem. Are they flying Boeing? If not, with all due respect to the gum chewer; I ain’t going.
I forgot to add this. I kinda like the guy or gal upfront in the left seat to have a few gray hairs. It bothers me when I see dudes that has only been shaving a few years in the left seat. I know they are good and must pass very stringent standards but I still like a few grey hairs in the left seat.
In reference to female pilots I have absolutely no problems. When I got my tickets, the best instructor was an incredible beautiful lady. When we were in an aircraft her sex and beauty were of absolutely no factor. During training I did not even realize she was beautiful nor a women. She was a professional doing her job. She was 100% professional and good at what she did. That is the reason I selected her to be my instructor.
Today she is a very senior captain with Southwest Airlines. She earned her position by her skill!
