Dying for Windows 10 Creators Update? But wait, there's more! (Windows10 2017 roadmap)

Microsoft roadmap lays out second big update for 2017

Microsoft has confirmed it is planning a second major update for Windows 10, which is to be piloted this year, and is seriously considering releasing it before 2018.

This is according to word out of Microsoft's Ignite partner conference in Australia, where the Redmond software giant revealed its map for upcoming operating system updates in a session.

Software engineer Rafael Rivera posted online screenshots of the operating system's roadmap, which shows that following the Creators Update release – due spring 2017 – a second, unnamed major Windows 10 update is slated to arrive later in the year to beta testers.

The last major update to Windows 10, the Anniversary Update, was kicked out to the general public in August of last year.

Microsoft has long promised that Creators Update would be the big overhaul for Windows in 2017, selling the release to developers on the strength of its plans to overhaul the Cortana assistant, add more support for virtual reality hardware, and improve mobile integration. Despite some speculation, however, it will not bring about the end of the Blue Screen of Death.

The Creators update is due out in a few months, though Microsoft has not given an official date for its release. The as-yet unnamed second update is expected to be released as a beta to Windows Insiders when the Creators Update goes live to the public, and will officially launch four to eight months later – a point in time before the end of the year, Microsoft hopes.

If the official launch of the second major update happens in, say, November 2017, the Creators Update is set to arrive next month at the earliest or July at the latest.

As Redmond-centric blog OnMsft notes, Microsoft has hinted in the past it could be looking to put out a second big update for Windows after the Creators Update was released, and this week's presentation confirms that goal.

The Register understands the timing of second update is yet to be finalized, with sources close to Redmond suggesting the Ignite revelation was directional guidance for IT managers rather than a hard and fast commitment to a release date. But those managers have, at least, now been warned they may be asked to consider a pre-Christmas upgrade.

You're very welcome, LakeEffectLad. Glad you like 'em.

You wouldn't happen to be from Upstate NY, would you? I'm near Ithaca, and Lake effect (snow) is pretty common here this time of year...

I've had almost no BSODs from 7, in dozens of machine-years of use. Never spent much time with 8 or 8.1.

WinXP had more, especially after installing or updating drivers or system patches.

Win98SE was a whole 'nother story, as you say. Amazing what we put up with.

driver issues in 98 was the worst- always dreaded having to update drivers, or add new hardware- I always knew there was going to be some issue- AND I only had dial-up at the time so it would take forever just to try to research what the problem might be lol- Seemed like i was always hunting down some .dll file to get something working right- I hated going through the ‘wizard’ to like install a new piece of hardware- you’d get to the ‘have disk’ part- but it could never find the right fail o the disk lol- had to hunt it down manually o nthe disk- Never seemed to work right-

Windows 7 was a real treat- everything was pretty much automatic- and just seemed to work right- I really enjoyed windows 7-
I’d add a new piece of hardware- and it would automatically find everything it needed, or go online and find it- easy peasy-

I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 10 and have been frustrated by what were simple fixes turned into difficult fixes.

Get Winaero Tweaker for Windows 10.
More tools here 7 Best Tools to Tweak and Customize Windows 10

Fixes many of the things that Microsoft REMOVED from past versions of Windows. Simple things like icon spacing and adding different colors to the title bar and different fonts.
As of the end of January they removed the ability to resize the text under the desktop icons and have them set to Segue UI and 9pt
9pt!! = tiny
All the fixes you find on the internet are now obsolete for that just because someone in Redmond, WA has eyes like an eagle and decided they like 9pt text size.

Apologies for the tardy reply, spent the last few days on a media blackout. Yes, southeast of Buffalo. Lake effect snow is an amazing phenomenon especially in close proximity to the lake. IMHO, WNY is one of the best kept secrets in the country - if only we had our own electoral college in New York...
Thanks again for all of the great IT posts.
