Los Angeles officially has the worst traffic in the world, a new study has revealed.
Global traffic research firm INRIX reports that Angelenos spent an average of 104 hours stuck in traffic in 2016.
The study also notes that traffic and congestion costs each Los Angeles driver “$2,408 each and the city as a whole $9.6 billion from direct and indirect costs. Direct costs relate to the value of fuel and time wasted, and indirect costs refer to freight and business fees from company vehicles idling in traffic, which are passed on to households through higher prices.”
INRIX noted that Moscow, Russia has the world’s second worst traffic congestion, with commuters in that city spending an average of 91 hours sitting in gridlocked vehicles. Manhattan, New York placed third internationally and second place in America with 89 hours. San Francisco, California placed fourth (83 hours); Bogota, Colombia was fifth (80 hours); and Sao Paulo, Brazil sixth (77 hours).

This morning I was driving to the local school and came to our town’s primary traffic light. Normally, I can turn right on red immediately. I complained because I had to wait on 2 semis and 4 cars. Will the little frustrations in life ever come to an end!!!
There is no free lunch, and the political classes make little effort to develop the solutions needed to improve traffic congestion.
That was Seoul, South Korea.
Right of way was determined by size of vehicle.
The first thing I thought about when I saw the flying cars idea promoted a few weeks back was my wife’s 80+ year old mom driving one of those.
Nope.
I’m getting a horse.
And I thought Austin traffic was bad.
One of the reasons I left that liberal sh!thole.
In the 1950's and early 1960's, it usually took us around an hour to get to the beach from our home in Whittier. We usually went to Huntington Beach.
The route took you past bean fields, and if you took Goldenwest Ave. through Westminster and Huntington Beach, it would take you past dozens of dairy farms. These were all gone by the mid-1960's.
By 1966, the San Gabriel River Freeway opened, giving us fast access to the beach. Nowadays, it's usually choked with traffic.
That freeway took only two years to build. Today, it takes 20 years just to widen an existing freeeway.
L.A. is no doubt worst in the US, but I find it hard to believe Bangkok isn't the runaway world #1. :)
My commute is 12 minutes on rural roads, so in a year I drive 104 hours total to and from work.
If they continue at this rate, while pandering to millions of criminal illegal aliens while forcing the tax payers to foot the bill, in another 10 or 20 years, CA be nearly as populated and Red China. It's nuts. CA is run by the criminally insane. No joke.
In 2015 and 2013, DC beat LA handily.
I'm sure we'll get the title back again next year or the year after...
Of course, maybe not once Trump makes America great again...the number of govvies may go down enough where DC won't have any rush hour at all. (Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?)
Who has the worst automobile accidents in the world? THIS list would be nice to know. Russia, with their dash cams, has so many social media videos online on crashes and other traffic related problems there that it makes it seem like Russia is the worst. But, I’m going to guess that, as bad as the driving continues to be in Russia, there are other parts of the world where driving is, even, worse, than what continues to happen within Russia.

LA has more sitting in traffic on it’s fwys than the entire population of D.C.

FWIW, the last time I was in LA (2012), I was actually surprised by how mellow and easy the traffic was...even on the infamous 110.

LA, Long Beach etc is a good selection. Roma, and a few other places might stake a claim. Istanbul is the best for bumper cars and death.

In Singapore recently ... traffic in that city is carefully regulated. You can’t purchase a vehicle without first obtaining a purchase permit to do so ... which can take two or three years waiting time as only so many are released annually. The cost is prohibitive as well ... several thousand dollars, I’ve been told up to $40 thousand for certain types of vehicles. Once granted the permit is valid for ten years and cannot be renewed for the same vehicle. What you see in Singapore are recent model vehicles, a lot of taxi’s, an excellent public transit system ... very well maintained roads/bridges & no traffic jams.
It’s proclaimed as a free market paradise.
Wonder how that can be with permits required just to buy a car?
It’s good to hear, though, that at least one huge city has whipped the traffic problem.
