Competitive performance
There has been much discussion about the eight cores sixteen threads Ryzen CPU and the fact that it will compete quite well against Intel's Core i7 6950 extreme edition but it looks like the Zen with eight cores with sixteen threads will get really close to the performance of the Core i7 7700K.
This is the sweet spot of the performance market and in recent years, Intel started charging customers close to 350 Euro/USD for the CPUs at this level, simply because it was lacking any serious competition. Our well placed industry sources confirm that a slightly slower closed eight core Ryzen with eight threads will compete well with Core i7 7700K series Kaby Lake processors.
This CPU was listed in a recent leak as R7 1700X and R7 1700 and from a manufacturing point of view, the silicon will end up more expensive per square inch but again, it will get AMD to a much better position than where it is today.
It would be good for AMD if the quad core Zen could compete with Core i7 and Core i5 quad core CPUs but this is not the case, at least not in the Core i5 and Core i7 higher end performance space. AMD so far doesnt have a native quad core eight core and all of the six and quad core versions are simply a big eight core with two or four cores disabled. This is not the first time weve seen AMD using this strategy as this happened before with the K10 series of Phenom processors in 2007. AMD launched three core processors that were just a quad core with one core disabled.
AMD will price its processors aggressively against Intels competing line up but this is hardly a surprise. From where we stand, AMDs CPU division looks better than its looked in over a decade and will take a significant bite of Intels CPU market share.

I never should have bought that APU. I may rebuild the kid’s computer to get a good processor. But I always have to replace the
Memory
CPU
& Motherboard
You can’t recycle any of it.

I am actually pricing out a build, and yes, the Kaby Lake 7700 is $350. How much can AMD shave off the price for a processor that isn’t any better? While the processor is now the biggest single expense of most builds (except for gamers/designers who spend more on graphics cards), it is still less than a third of the cost of a whole new system. I don’t see myself casting my lot with a new AMD processor to save $75.

My two servers are 8 years old and way out of date, but I am on a budget. Any suggestions whether to go AMD versus Intel for bang for the buck?
To: Dr. Sivana
I think you might have missed part of the point - if AMD does come out with something close, but not quite there at - say - $200, Intel is going to have a hard time justifying a $150 premium, so they’ll likely have to drop their price to $225-$250. You’ll still get the Intel processor you prefer, but it’ll cost you 1/3rd less.

If they can meet a $200 price point they'll get some OEMs, but as these are high-end systems, I think most business class customers will go with Intel and spend the money. In the early days of Athlon, Intel adjusted their price, but not a whole lot, and their chips had a tendency to overheat back then. AMD never really took any bracket except gamers/overclockers and the low-end.
While AMD is a mature player, occasional glitches that are AMD specific with Windows patches still pop up occasionally. I hope you are right, though. Competition is good. I think right now Intel's competition is mainly from ARM based processors. Intel's scalability will keep them fighting off all comers in the desktop market for some time.

I don’t believe the Ryzen’s with onboard GPU’s ship until Summer. No issue for hard core gamers whom need a dedicated Video card, but further wait for those wanting a budget build. AMD’s on board GPU have always been far and away better than Intels allowing for some gaming at low to med. settings
Not sure what AMD’s plan are to compete with the new Intel hyperthreading Pentiums in the sub $100 class?

The first Reysen chips do not have iGP’s...The APU’s are cal the Raven Ridge family and they seem to be coming 3Q 17...they will be Quad core.

New details are being leaked daily...Some on line retailers have prices listed...best guess is the low quad is 129! Motherboard details are a bit sketchy but there are some.
Just getting ready to dig into this article:
