More than a decade ago, federal and state officials and some of Californias largest water agencies rejected concerns that the massive earthen spillway at Oroville Dam at risk of collapse Sunday night and prompting the evacuation of 185,000 people could erode during heavy winter rains and cause a catastrophe.
Three environmental groups the Friends of the River, the Sierra Club and the South Yuba Citizens League filed a motion with the federal government on Oct. 17, 2005, as part of Oroville Dams relicensing process, urging federal officials to require that the dams emergency spillway be armored with concrete, rather than remain as an earthen hillside.

What was it Rahm said, ‘Never let a crisis go to waste’.
If it weren’t so serious, this would be kind of funny. The environmental groups wanted to pour concrete and the Bush and Schwarzenegger administration’s wanted to keep it natural.
Moonbeam’s fault!
But they have plenty of money to spend on high speed trains.
Ping :-)
“The Global Warming politicians thought there would not be snow in the mountains after 2015 and planned accordingly.”
Fantastic insight.
Brings AGW policy from abstract optimism to deadly consequences for being wrong.
Well, at least the lawyers are making some money. Who cares about public safety.
WOW!
After reading through the articles you posted I have a much better understanding of what actually is going on there. Thanks for the links mewzilla.
This reads just like a chapter from ‘Atlas Shrugged’ excepting the fact that the FERC chairman just changed under the Trump administration.
Delaying relicensing (and needed repairs) because Global Climate Change wasn’t taken nto considereation, SHEESH!!!
Many thanks for the info!
Govt messups endangering hundreds of thousands...
This goes back a lot longer than 12 years. I was stationed at Beale AFB in the late 80’s and there were people back then raising concerns about Oroville.
If Governor Moonbeam had spent more tax dollars on CONSULTANTS like Eric Holder, Chocolate City Nagin, maybe those
really smart guys could have avoided these kind of problems,,,,,? /sarc

Great idea. Besides, most of their backs are still wet from crossing the Rio
I heard California is going to file a lawsuit against Mother Nature for dumping all that rain on them this winter which caused the current crisis at the Oroville Dam. After all she is white according to all the depictions of her, and we know how Democrats love white people these days.
Gov. of CA in 2005 - Arnie.
Scapegoating has started - FERC, DWR and water companies.
But you can be sure they’ll get their digs in at Arnie if they think they can blame it on a Republican.
Sierra Club !?!
Even A Blind Hog...
If anyone reads it and thinks it was mean, I was actually going for “ironic”.
The Left will not take notice unless a favored group is in danger.
Well . . . Sacramento (State capitol) is approximately 70 miles downrange.
Not likely to be affected
Oroville and Yuba City looks like any mid-western town
No, it’s the State of Cakifornia’s fault. They built, own and operate the dam. A simple math model would show that with inflows exceeding outflows the res would soon be filled to the brim. The controlled spillway was designed for 250k cfs. Only yesterday did they bump the outflow from 60k to 100k. They have had a month at least to be working on maintaining reserve capacity in the reservoir. Check out the daily outflow rate over the last two months. Yesterday they finally hit the panic button. Poor management of their resource.
